It’s a good thing that his mother could multitask because it seems like she is trying to run things from the sixth floor family room at the local hospital. She’d told him to go down and report Justin missing just as planned but to take Paul instead of Tulane with him. Whatever Justin had been involved in had gotten him killed, Narin still in surgery and Twink who the hell knows where. Mom had put Drew and Tulane on making copies of everything that belonged to Justin and reminded Drew to wear gloves since there was no reason for his prints to be on Justin’s stuff. It Bill didn’t have to be at the police station he’d be searching too. There might be a clue in Justin’s stuff about what happened to Twink. Mom wants all of Justin’s stuff turned over to the police and the sooner the better but she also knows that as soon as Justin’s things are turned over that they would have no access to it and the likelihood of the cops sharing information with them was way less than what the cops were expecting from them. It’s pretty much a one way street. According to Mom, they needed to have everything copied within three hours, that’s when Yuri Bogdonov is landing, HanNa’s son. Mom said not to stall, not to watch the clock, don’t do anything suspicious or anything that might look like obstruction. She just wants him to wait until they get around to asking the question.
Sure enough as soon as Bill announced at the front counter of the police station why he was there he was asked to take a seat. Figuring he’s going to be there for a while, he pulls out his pad of postcard blanks and starts sketching what he sees. Paul shakes his head but pulls out a contract that needs to be reviewed signed and sent back to a potential artist’s agent. For once Bill seems to have the right idea. There is no use in complaining, might as well make the best of things since they both know there are people that are much worse off.

“Bill Radcliffe?”

Bill comes to his feet and slides the notebook back in his jacket pocket. “That’s me.”

“You’re here to file a missing person report on Justin Leonard?”

“Yeah, I tried to do it a couple of days ago but they told me I had to wait until today to give him a chance to come back.”

“Come on back.” The detective buzzes open the door and holds it for Bill to come back.

Paul gets to his feet as well.

“And you are?”

“Bill’s lawyer, Paul Reston. I’m just going to be in the room doing my own paperwork.” Paul hands over one of his business cards.

“You need a lawyer?” The detective asks Bill Radcliffe.

“Probably not but I want to get things going for Justin and I don’t want to have to stop again and wait for a lawyer if I think I do need one later so I brought Paul. He’s a friend of my sister and I talked to him because I was pissed when you guys wouldn’t take the report three days ago. I’ve had three days to run scenarios through my head and unfortunately I have a very good imagination. Do you have a business card?”

“Yeah,” the Detective leads Bill to a room that looks a lot like The Box seen on TV rather than a couple of chairs by the detective’s desk. The detective indicates with a hand to have a seat and then pulls out his card.

Bill isn’t surprised to be in an interrogation room. He figures that there are people watching from behind the mirror. He takes the detective’s card. Boston PD—looks like the FBI is still playing nice. Considering all the stories he’d heard about the FBI as he’d been growing up, he can’t imagine it will last for long. “I downloaded the form off the police website and filled it out. Detective… Kerrigan. I’ve attached some pictures of him too.”

“We have the 72 hour rule because adults sometimes take a long weekend or leave voluntarily.”

“Yeah, I get that.” Bill nods. “Justin took a beating a few days before the last time I saw him last. He said he fell up some stairs. Total Bull. We found out three days ago that Justin had not paid his fees at school and had been dropped when someone started moving into the dorm room. Looking back we could tell that he’d been basically traveling with me or our other roommate Tulane, coming in on other people’s mag keys. Waiting until we were home before coming back. Been trying to get hold of him on his cell but no answer. I put the cell phone number on the report. I put the dorm address down because that’s the only address I know. I think his parents live back in Kansas or something but I never got an address.”

“Do you know if he has a driver’s license or changed it over to Massachusetts?”

“He might have had more than one ID.” Bill admits. “He liked going to the clubs. That one was as Justin Lakeland age 24.”

“So not might… he did have another ID that you saw. Do you have more than one ID, Mr Radcliffe?”

“Bill, don’t answer that one.” Paul says not looking up from his contract. “This is about Justin not you.”

“I was adopted when I was eight so I did have a different name as a kid but I like William Alan Radcliffe well enough to not need any other name.”

“Do you know what clubs Mr Leonard liked to frequent?”

“Do you have a phone book?” Bill says wryly. He names off the top three that he’d heard Justin talk about. “But if it was within walking distance of Emerson and there were hot chicks there then he was probably in there at least once unless he got a hinky feeling from the bouncer looking at his ID.”

The detective makes a note of the three clubs named. “So partying, alcohol, girls… was there any other drugs or reasons why you think he might be in trouble.”

“Drugs I don’t know… nothing I really saw to say he was twitchy or something. He was definitely having money issues but never to the point that he was stealing from me or Tulane… at least never that I found out about.”

“If you don’t mind waiting. I’m going to go run record checks on Justin Leonard and under Lakeland as well to see if anything pops see if we have any more questions.”

“No problem.” Bill reaches into his pocket and pulls out the small sketchpad again. Since he doesn’t have the distraction of the people coming and going from the station he starts sketching his favorite subject from memory.

Paul would love to say something but he knows that they are being observed. Probably shouldn’t be since it is a guy with his lawyer but he’d rather not have to fight that fight down the road even if it is one he is going to win.

Bill reaches up with his left hand so that it steadies the notebook but also so that he can see the time without really looking at his watch. It’s getting to the point in the timeline that he could offer up Justin’s things. He’d already given Justin’s phone number to Mouse to do research any calls that Justin might have made. He understands that it’s a bitch to have to play by the rules but still he’s kind of ticked that they’ve been talking, hell that the cops know that Justin is dead but they are still playing the missing person game. At the sound of the door opening, Bill looks over. It’s not Detective Kerrigan. From the looks of these two, the FBI is no longer behind the glass.

“Mr Radcliffe, do you know Tatiana Quartermaine?”

“Do you have any business cards please?” Bill asks. “I like to know who I’m talking to.”
Paul puts up the contract he’d been working on and pulls up his chair to the table.

The two agents pull out cards and hand them to Bill. He nods at the confirmation. FBI. He slides the cards to Paul. “Of course I know Tatiana Quartermaine. She’s my cousin. She was kidnapped this morning and they put out an AMBER alert on her. Twink’s bodyguard and the man she loves like a father is fighting for his life in the hospital after taking two bullets in the back. My mother is at the hospital right now keeping vigil for Narin. I’m planning on heading over there after I get done with this.”

“Did Justin Leonard know Tatiana Quartermaine?”

“To party or go clubbing with? No. But he’d met her both at the dorms when Twink came to visit me with her dog or when I went over to CSMC talent and Twink was working at the real estate office.”

“He ever question you about Miss Quartermaine?”

“He always seemed more interested in my cousin Fancy… Faith Monroe—the actress or my sister Chandy Radcliffe. I had to remind him a couple of times that Chandy is my sister and to watch his mouth because he liked the rock and roll chicks.”

“That was noticed when he came back CSMC by Tori Palmer the office manager for Talent.” Paul adds.

“Mr Radcliffe, do you realize that you’ve never referred to Justin Leonard in the present tense, only the past?”

“I believe he’s dead. Do you think he’s not?”

“Mr Radcliffe, why are you playing games?”

Bill pulls one of the cards back from Paul. “Agent Greene? I stopped playing games three days ago when I had to pack up Justin’s stuff because the school had dropped a new roommate on us with no warning.”

“You packed his things. Are they at the dorm?”

“No, my cousin has a place outside of Boston. They’re being stored there in the garage.”

“You have a lot of cousins.”

“Yes, I do.” Bill gets to his feet. “Now I figure this is going to go one of two ways. Either you’re going to want me to drive out with you to get Justin’s things… or you’re going to want me to call my cousin Drew to let him know that you’re coming for Justin’s stuff and to let you have it.”

“Or I’m going to go with the nice agents and you’re going to the hospital. Drew knows me.” Paul offers. He really wants to be there to make sure that all that is taken is Justin’s things and to find out if Yuri has arrived yet.

“If you have any more questions for me I’ll be at the hospital.” Bill tells the agents.
