Bill had come straight from the police station to the hospital to be there when Narin comes out of surgery. Skye had been trying to multitask but had been cautious to make sure that it was nothing important because her focus is on whoever walks by the door wanting it to be Robert or Travis or anyone with news. Realistically she knows it could be a couple of more hours. But every minute seems like hours. She’s not only afraid for Narin but her heart feels like ice with worry about Twink. The people who had taken her… their intention hadn’t been to kill two, it had been to kill three. Narin wasn’t supposed to live long enough to let anyone know about the kidnapping.
Bill comes over and gives her a kiss on the cheek. “It’s done.”
“I know that was hard, honey.”
“I just wanted to drop everything in a bow in their lap. And I might have if they had lead with the FBI, if one of the FBI agents wasn’t Agent Greene.”
“You’re kidding me.” Skye looks at Bill in disbelief. She’s glad that Paul had been with Bill rather than going herself which had been her original thought. She doesn’t think she could have kept her opinions to herself especially after Greene had bugged Lisa’s home with Morgan.
Bill shakes his head and pulls out the business cards he’d taken: the Boston detective and then the two FBI agents.
Skye sighs in relief that Dante Falconari’s card isn’t there. The family had enough to deal with without dealing with Sonny’s bastard with a chip on his shoulder. “Drew called. He and Tulane finished making copies of everything before Paul showed up with the cops.”
“Yuri?”
“Tori says he’s already arrived at CSMC –Boston and taken an apartment there. Mouse and Yuri are a little annoyed at me breaking the window at Twink’s place and letting the cops in.”
“If the cops could have found her, or if she had been there it would have been worth it. Just like the AMBER alert. If it would have worked then the FBI could have just held their opinions to themselves.”
“I know, honey. That’s what I think too.” Skye pats Bill’s hand.
“When is Dad going to be here?”
“He didn’t say he was coming so I’m sure he’ll call when he’s at the airport.” Skye holds Bill’s hand. Right now all she wants to do is hug all of her kids. People had questioned her choices many times over the years but marrying Cole and living out on the lake… none of her kids had been kidnapped. And up until Hillary, none of them had been shot at. And that had been because of her connections to the Quartermaines not Cole. She’d been at her share of funerals with the foster kids who hadn’t made it. She felt like it was more than her share and every time that happened she feels like it wouldn’t have happened if only she and Cole had kept the child like they’d kept Hill, Bill and Lee.
“How long have you been sitting alone?”
“Not long. Travis and Robert have been checking on me. They haven’t been able to find out much about the surgery and that’s probably a good thing. Colby knows this is going to be awhile. She’s told me she’d bring lunch.”
Bill brings the back of his mother’s hand to his lips and gives her a smacking kiss on the back of it trying to break the tension a little. “She’s been training for this all her life, Mom.”
“That’s the same thing Agent Ellis told Lydia on the conference call. It should make me feel better but it really doesn’t.”
Bill slides his other arm around his mother’s shoulders and gives her a hug leaning in close. “Dad will be here soon.”
“I know. I can white knuckle it until then.”
“I’ll be here too.”
“Thanks.”
Grant’d gone back to the office and changed into the spare suit he kept behind the door in his office. From there he’d gone to harass the vid guys looking for anything that might be a clue. Chris had caught the van quick enough and even a partial plate. The news had gone out on an AMBER alert. As soon as the FBI came on board they’d taken the information off the websites, TV and radio and released the information only to governmental agencies. With the FBI in place the pissing match had already started at the local, state and federal level. Grant had already gotten phone calls from Robby Winkler over at State. Since he doesn’t have to talk to Twink and her mother is an airplane away, he is calm, functional and productive. Winkler has someone meeting every plane that flew out of Logan before the AMBER alert had gone in place.
Bill Markum, the detective out of Cambridge had shown up at Twink’s place, after the uniforms had been through, just about the time that the FBI had come in and been confiscating everything electronic in the house. Markum had gritted his teeth and knew he wasn’t going to be saying anything nice so he’d headed over to see Twink’s professor at the old marine’s house and let him in on the news if he hadn’t been watching it on the local news during that brief window when the AMBER alert had been on air. He hadn’t. The Professor had lost the strength in his legs when Markum had told him the news. The Cambridge Detective had grabbed the professor and assisted him to an easy chair.
“The FBI is running the show.” Markum told him overly calm to give the older man time to get his composure back. “Or they’re running it until Twink’s mother arrives and then who knows who will be standing after the explosion.” Markum takes a seat across from the professor. “This is going to get ugly. It could be money. It could be the work she does for Homeland Security. It could be the work she does at the shelter. One of those hot head exs looking for his woman and kids. She was snatched outside the gym. But it was an organized snatch.” Markum is working it through aloud. “The cab driver and a teenager were in the trunk of the cab that was abandoned at the gym.”
“Narin? That mutt of hers?”
Markum shakes his head. “She was putting Lurch in the back seat when the grab happened. She was half in and half out of the vehicle. Lurch took two to the chest and her back pack was right outside the open back passenger door. I figure that is about the only way that someone could have got that close to her was if she was basically already in the trap. And if she was in the trap then you know they would have had leverage on Narin.”
“Narin?”
“Two in the back. Last I heard he was still in surgery. He isn’t going to be talking for hours yet.”
“So the people who have taken her have already proven their metal. They are willing to kill as part of their plan.” The professor takes a breath and then exhales. “If Twink isn’t dead already then she isn’t going to live past whatever it is they want—whether it’s money or information. Then she stops being a golden ticket and starts being a witness.”
Markum nods. “Yeah, that’s the feeling I get too. FBI pulled the AMBER alert because they don’t want to spook them. Time is everything but the fact that I’m here and they’re not means that they aren’t listening to their locals.”
“Twink didn’t have that many dealing with the Boston police other than throwing occasional classes with Narin. She stuck pretty close to home normally unless she was either at the gym or going to CSMC for her part time job.”
“Part time job?”
“Worked the customer service counter a couple of days of month down at the CSMC building—mostly people paying rent and taking message for any questions they might have. CSMC didn’t mind if she brought Lurch. The girl who runs the CSMC real estate… Tori, yes ,I think her name was Tori. She would housesit and take care of Lurch if Twink was out of town.”
“I think I’m going to go have a chat with her.”
“What can I do?”
“Work the campus angle. Teenager in the trunk. They haven’t released the name yet but you might want to find out if any of your other students are missing. And I’m serious about going to need you around to keep it cool. Twink’s mother…” Markum shakes his head. “I get the feeling that Winkler is more afraid of her than Twink and he takes a Xanax whenever he has to talk to Twink.”
The professor gives a snorting laugh at that. “I’ll make some calls.”
“I have my cell on me.”
Well I happen to have tomorrow off... so while this one is short I have no doubt there will be more added to it. Doubt it will be a slam like Thanksgiving... but I hope to hear what you think. Hmm... who hasn't arrived yet, ah Cole and Edward from Port Charles... could that be next? Deb
