I think this week the writers knew they had a pretty tough situation being tossed at the Sonny character, which of course Maurice could handle as always. The problem was keeping balance for his fans.
That is something in the past years that was tossed aside and rarely considered. Had these writers trashed Sonny again and given him the same one dimensional unreasonable reaction Guza constantly wrote for him, this week would be a disaster for Sonny fans. Instead Sonny was written balanced and layered.
I am sure he will struggle and they will show that, and as a mob boss he should be written to want retaliation. It is how they manage the balance between mobster and family man that is now vital to a new and improved Sonny character.
