He was being transported somewhere and either the car crashed - I don't really remember - but he basically escaped and saved Marty Saybrooke's life and then hid out in the garden shed at Vicky's and made friends with Tina's kids. They gave him a reduced sentence I think because he saved Marty's life. Personally I don't think he deserved to have been released at all and even his original sentence was way too lenient for all the violent crimes he committed.
