I believe in repaying political favors and Obama owes him more than he owes almost anyone. Without that keynote speech Obama wouldn't be President now.

The key with him becoming SoS is Patrick appointing someone who can win again in two years. Much like the ex-gov of NY appointed Gillilbrand in Clinton's place and she won handily.
