...I think it's possible he was not hit by a bullet, but instead by flying glass from a monitor. It's possible he was very slightly grazed, but given that he's been sketchy about his "wound", he may not want it made clear exactly how superficial it was.

As for how it happened, I tend not to look for conspiracies when there is a very simple explanation of incompetence.
