Do you remove the guns from the home? That would seem like a reasonable step, right?

The father admitted to having hunting guns, but said the son did not have “unsupervised access.”

AR-like rifles are not hunting guns. In one year, when exactly did he get access to the weapon? How did he get a gun that doesn't fit a backpack into the school?
