and before Martinizing. (The guy who created the Martinizing franchise asked my father if he could use his name and method and my father turned him down...anyway...)

My father would find out what the union was trying to get and either match it or give close enough to it so his workers wouldn't leave to go to a union shop/try to form a union. Unions make businesses at least consider acting better.
