possibly other/all states?) Now that Deshaun Watson is done for the season, I'm once again watching Browns' games...anyways, I was in the living room this afternoon watching the Browns play badly and Dad shocked me by coming in and asking if I wanted to go vote early at the county board of elections. Um...what? What about our tradition? He'd noticed I was working on Election Day; I'd made a point of requesting EITHER the early shift or the later shift, not some weird "stretch" shift that would have me at work most of the day and explained our tradition of voting and a meal and I was "graciously" granted the 9:30 AM-3:00 PM shift. Not a problem; when I was at the bindery, I'd get home around 3:45, we'd go vote, then we'd either get an early dinner or we'd go somewhere else before going to dinner. But I guess Dad forgot that was never a problem even with folks getting home from work and then going to vote so around 2:30, we drove over to the county board of elections...
The line was out the door. I'd estimate there were at least 100 people in it, and who knows how many more inside. Dad was now the one who was shocked. I reminded him that when we vote on Election Day, it's just the voters from our town but there's 16 towns in my county, with one of them being fairly large (the one with the county board of elections). Our town is roughly 3300 people...if you figure half of those are children, and between a third and a half of the remaining half aren't going to bother to vote (*coughmyauntcough*), and probably some of those voting have already voted by mail or dropped off a ballot in the ballot box or did early voting in person, and my town is divided into 9 precincts (why so many for a small town, I don't know) and 5 of of the precincts vote at another location while ours and 3 others vote at the one school, well, I don't think Dad has to worry much about a line on Election Day.
So instead of voting today, we dropped off our recyclables in the bins behind the board of elections, went to Aldi's for a few necessities and came home in time to see the end of the Browns' game.
