Politico: (full article linked)
“President Donald Trump on Tuesday turned the White House South Lawn into a makeshift showroom for Tesla, the car produced by Elon Musk, in an extraordinary bid to boost the business of a major campaign donor who now wields significant power over the federal government.
“I think he’s been treated very unfairly by a very small group of people,” Trump said, as he inspected five different Tesla models parked in front of the South Portico. “And I just want people to know that he can’t be penalized for being a patriot.”
The president reiterated his pledge to personally purchase a Tesla as a show of support for Musk, who he has tasked with slashing the federal workforce. The billionaire has faced increasing scrutiny over his actions, with lawmakers and even some of Trump’s own Cabinet secretaries have criticizing the cuts as indiscriminate and damaging.
Musk’s high-profile role has also weighed on Tesla, which has seen its stock plummet in recent weeks amid backlash to the dramatic jobs cuts.
“You should cherish him,” Trump said, standing alongside Musk. “We have to take care of our high IQ people, because we don’t have too many of them.”
Trump later said he hoped the impromptu promotional event would help Tesla’s sales….
…Should Trump follow through, it would represent an unprecedented effort by a president to prop up a company led by one of his top advisers and donors. Musk spent close to $300 million to help Trump get elected. His subsequent role as a special government employee has already raised a slew of ethical concerns, allowing him to continue running several private-sector businesses while overseeing deep cuts across the federal government…
…Some of those companies, including Tesla and his satellite internet company Starlink, compete for billions of dollars in contracts managed by federal agencies that Musk has sought to overhaul.…”
