In my class I was talking about acculturation (this idea that minority groups can reject, assimilate, welcome, etc. both the dominant culture group and their specific "minority" culture group).
I showed them this video from Oprah about a Black family who are Hassidic Jews.
One student commented that it seemed as though Oprah was suggesting that you couldn't be Black and be a Hassidic Jew.
I said that perhaps it was more that the expected cultural norm of being a Black person in America meant that you were either non-religious or Christian. That being Jewish and Black wasn't expected and/or surprising within the Black community.
I am neither Jewish or Black, so this is the best I can come up with to give him as an answer. I was wondering if other SZers had greater insight into this?
