Every high end purse that I purchased ($1K +) I have gotten either the price I paid or MORE when I sold them. Not all bags but vintage LV, Chanel, and Hermes bags are like art.

With that said the most expensive bag I ever purchased was $1700 (Chanel Grand Shopping Tote) . I used it almost everyday for four years and sold it for $2200.

Edited... I remembered the LV MC Speedy 30 I purchased for more than the Chanel but I also got more than I paid (but I didn't keep it as long).
