but once the child is independent and on their own, you can't control them anymore nor should you try unless they're doing something truly self destructive.
For instance, not finishing college wouldn't have been an option for us. My parents provided financial support while I was in school. If I left school, then I would have had to be ready to support myself whereas finishing college gave me additional support while I looked for a job post-school.
Now that I'm on my own, my parents do advise me but the decisions are my own. And honestly, I don't think of them when I make decisions. I listen to their advice but ultimately it's up to me whether I take a certain job, move somewhere...etc.
