What the 'deal' was is that at the time the movie takes place both Jack and Ennis would have been killed for who they were. I think that's the reason I fell into this film. As for Williams, I could care less for Alma. She had no right to say what she did to Ennis about Jack. They were divorced and she'd moved on with another man. Ennis' life was his own.

What I mean about "deal', is the media made the movie imo out to be better then it was like they do with ton of movies but this one in particular I felt it was overhyped. I've seen the subject matter touched in movies esp. indies and was done to an extent better or rather I felt more for the love story. But then I felt the same thing about Notebook and how it was such a big deal and I was turned off by it but years later away from the hype I love the movie. I think that had to happen for me with BBM.

Unlike you I cannot stand Alma. I think both she and Lureen, Hathaway's character, are both loathesome. I just cannot connect with either of them. Lureen because of how her father treated Jack and Alma because of the fact I just cannot stand the character. By the time she confronts Ennis over the kiss and what she suspected about Jack and calling him "Jack Nasty" I just wanted to shove my fist through her face. She and Ennis were divorced by that time. She had moved on and was pregnant with her new husband's child. Interesting Ennis' older daughter Alma Jr. cared more for him than her mother did. I think she knew and didn't care. Her wanting to go and live with her father, I think, was her way of rebelling against her really strict mother and step-father. As I said, I hated Alma (MW) with a passion.

Well, I never talked to anyone who hated Alma, esp. with such passion, lol. She just broke my heart and I felt bad she was being wronged in her marriage. So while it was over when she did confront him I got the scars was still there for her and she had the "guts" to finally call him on what he did to her. Her calling him nasty and being against him being gay was wrong. But on the purpose of a woman who was cheated on and the "long suffering wife" as they portrayed her to be I felt bad for her. Lureen was just awful and while my sympathies weren't really there for her as I don't think she ever loved Jack it was still a not okay situation. But I do agree about the daughter and thought she was awesome even though it seems like Ennis wasn't really in her life as she would have wanted. I also think it showed a bit of a generational thing. She knew but all she wanted and should have wanted was her dad to be her dad. She was great and I would have loved to see more of her.

There's some consternation between those that believe what Lureen told Ennis and from what Annie Proulx, the author, has said. Proulx says Jack's death was as Lureen told Ennis. I personally believe her father had something to do with Jack's death. After all he was always quipping about Jack not "being a real man." Now one could say that Jack's death was as is because according to Proulx and screenwriter Larry McMurty, these kinds of things do happen...the part about the tire blowing, but for me personally I tend to believe Jack was murdered.

Yeah, I thought Jack got caught because they showed him going to Mexico and a hint that he maybe caught so the way Lureen was saying it seemed like she had something to do with it. Interesting what the Author said, thanks.

Love and other drugs is my movie! I adore it and JG and AH have great chemistry!

Agreed. I loved this film because of the leads. Funny too how two actors can play two different roles and still be good in them.

Yeah, they made it work. So good and still think JG is underated. :)

Thanks! :)
