Can someone tell me what the format is to convert videos onto the Kindle Fire HD? For example is it avi, mp4 etc?

Also, can anyone recommend a converter that works for the Kindle Fire HD, and since I am converting from my hard drive, Whispernet wouldn't work right? I would have to use the USB cord to drag the video onto the Kindle?
