Ha. I am debating whether or not I'll lurk on the 911 subreddit if that happens. Usually neutral sites at least try to stay within the realm of canon even while shipping a fanon couple but the takes there were wild as hell. I'm truly curious how they're going to reconcile their certainty of Buck and Eddie getting together with Eddie leaving.
When I say pop up, I meant I could see him appearing in the season finale. Maybe have him visit after Maddie's baby is born or something like that.
As for contracts, most initial contracts these days are for six seasons. For hits, there's usually a renegotiation where the cast gets more money to add a year onto their deals. That would have put contracts up at the end of last season for the original group.
RG and JLH started a year later but there's no guarantee that they were offered six seasons too. Since they started later, they could have been offered fewer years. Or maybe they were given six seasons but no renegotiation. From what I've read, Angela, Peter and JLH are paid more per episode but Kenny, Aisha, Oliver and Ryan all made the same amount. Even if RG tried to negotiate, they wouldn't pay him more than they were willing to pay the rest of them.
The thing about contracts that doesn't make sense is that he should be under contract even if he's currently negotiating. Leaving midseason is pretty strange for a long term cast member.
It has happened before but it makes me think of The Good Wife or Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. In both of those situations, an actor (Josh Charles and Santino Fontana) both had contracts that ended the season before they left. Both shorter than normal. In both cases, the actors agreed to stay for some additional episodes in the following season so the creators could write them out.
I do wonder if Ryan's contract was actually up last season and he let them know that he was ready to leave. Then they worked out a scenario where he'd appear in some episodes this season for a midseason departure. Sending Chris to TX was possibly the first step.
It's just a theory. And yes, I have seen the sunset shots.
