To be fair, there were extenuating circumstances...

For context, most church fish frys in the area are all you can eat. And by that, they mean everything on your plate. Want 5 pieces of fish? Sure! Want 3 helpings of mac and cheese? Why not? Want 27 dinner rolls? Who doesn't? You just keep going back and back and back until you're stuffed and ready to waddle out of the church.

Tonight's fish fry was not quite that. If you got the basic fried whitefish (as opposed to the fried walleye, the fried shrimp or the baked fish), you could have as many pieces of fish as you please, although the size of each fish filet was HUGE so I don't know why anyone would need more than one. You could get either endless fries or endless rice pilaf with your fish; the fries were hand cut and absolutely delicious and again, one serving felt like practically an entire 5 lb. bag of potatoes so I don't know who would need to go back for more fries. There were little cups of coleslaw that were AYCE as was the dinner rolls. But there were also some side dishes that usually are standard at a fish fry--salad, mac and cheese, clam chowder and dessert--those were an extra charge, as were all drinks. Again, for context, most AYCE fish frys are up to about $20-25 per person (I still remember when I thought $10 per person was a lot). Tonight I got the whitefish/fries/coleslaw for $17, added a cup of mac and cheese for $6 (all but two bites of it came home with me), bought a $2 can of Minute Maid lemonade (there was a cantina that was also selling Greek beer and wine)...and brought home a $25 "large sampler" plate of homemade Greek pastries, including my brother's favorite: koulourakia [link]

I'm actually getting off pretty easy this visit. Usually when Sis and BIL are here, there's at least 3-4 meals out, rarely any at an inexpensive place. But tonight might be my only meal out with them due to me having an unfortunately busier than normal weekend and them having a shorter than usual trip.
