I'm definitely ok with cleaning up some language (but even then, only to a point*) but changing major things that no longer make the plot work as well is a bad idea.

*An example would be that I don't think you should take the N word out of a book like "To Kill A Mockingbird" because confronting racism and injustice is the point of that story. But "Huckleberry Finn" could be a whole different debate.
