hostile spaces in pro-sports for queer people -- as evidenced by the fact that no NHL players, current or past, have ever come out.
The NHL has had a lot of issues around pride nights -- which they do have -- and pride tape. They have a big problem because so many players are Russian and Russia is actively hostile to queer people. The players are literally scared to show support for the very concept, because they are worried for themselves when they go back home, and they're worried for their families.
Luke is Canadian and he's also not in the NHL (though he had a contract) so he's not disproving the point -- it's great that he's out and he's spoken quite a bit about HR, but it's not disproving the issues the NHL has.
