family is German and Mom’s is British. Both my parents were very reserved and not huggers. Yet both my sister and I grew up to be easy huggers. Maybe it’s a combination of other cultural influences and some rebellion against my parents’ reserved nature. My sister and I often joke that we must have some Latino in us. We both express our emotions pretty easily and sometimes, uh, loudly. Hugging feels like a natural expression. So does crying and laughing and yelling. Now that you have me thinking about it, my cousins are pretty openly expressive even though their mom (my aunt and my dad’s sister) is from the German side of the family. She married an Italian man and I guess their Italian side of the family dominated for my cousins.
