News for the week of 05-May-2008

by Carol Banks Weber

The only actor from AMC to earn a Daytime Emmy nomination was David Canary (Adam/Stuart) as an outstanding lead actor. Otherwise, it’s a complete shut-out, save for a few piddling technical noms. The announcement happened on The ViewApril 30. AMC also earned nomination spots for the following: outstanding drama series directing team, outstanding achievement in multiple camera editing, outstanding achievement in music direction and composition, outstanding achievement in lighting direction, outstanding achievement in technical direction/electronic camera/video control and outstanding original songs “The Me Inside” and “Treasure Of Love.”

Rebecca Budig (Greenlee) tried out Insolia High Heel Inserts for talk show host Rachael Ray on her April 22nd episode, to see if they’re as comfortable as advertised. Budig appeared on Ray’s show for a special Human Lab: Soap Star Edition along with John-Paul Lavoisier (Rex, OLTL) and Nadia Bjorlin (Chloe, DOOL). Budig loves to wear high heels, not just because she loves fashions, but because she said she’s 5’1” short… However, her heel fetish causes her to suffer frequently from pinched nerves in her toes, so Budig was eager to try these inserts out around the studio. The inserts are supposed to reshift the pressure, spreading it around the feet, not just the toes. For the most part, Budig said it worked. “Normally, I feel the pressure in my toes and that's where I get the pain and I actually don't feel it in my toes. The only drawback is that my feet sweat a little more -- but the tradeoff is worth it.”

Budig also appeared on The View a week or so ago to give away bottles of Charmed! perfume and charm bracelets related to her and her cast members’ storyline on AMC. These cross-promotional products are available at Sears.

Dig a bit, and you’ll find Ricky Paull Goldin (Jake) really didn’t dig his GL time as Gus toward the end. It was a long time, the longest (seven years), for the January 5th-born actor. He didn’t really understand what they were doing with the character, or why they weren’t acting on his chemistry with Beth Ehlers’ Harley. Goldin found other outlets outside of his work on GL. He built and refurbished yachts, bought and flipped homes. Nevertheless, GL weighed heavy. It comes out when he compares GL to a more hands-on AMC. He described meeting co-head writers Barbara Esensten and Jim Harmon Brown, and their offering to be available to talk any time he needed. “I was not used to that from where I had just come [GL],” he said. “[AMC] [t]hey do it right. You don’t need to be so secretive. It’s not the Pentagon. We’re all in this together to make a really good product. I’m not talking about storyline; I’m talking about inside the institution itself – actor to actor, producers, directors, it needs to be a team, a big team effort.” He didn’t really sequeway over from GL to AMC seamlessly; he said he quit GL first, then AMC fell in his lap. Before taking on the AMC recast role, Goldin traveled to Rome, Italy for a family reunion and celebration of his late father, hypnotist Paul Goldin (who passed away six weeks prior to the reunion trip). –Soap Opera Digest, “Martin Invasion” by Mara Levinsky, May 6, 2008

GL’s Beth Ehlers (Harley) and ABC Daytime have been discussing the possibilities, either for AMC or GH.

Sydney Penny (Julia) will soon leave the show, as storyline-dictated, once Tad finds out Kathy’s Kate.

Brian Gaskill (ex-Rafe, PC) might reprise Bobby Warner.

Former GH co-head writer Charles Pratt Jr. and former OLTL executive producer Gary Tomlin might take over AMC as its head-writing team.

Jeff Branson (Jonathan) communicated his AMC status with fans in a recent letter. The status ends after his June 2008 contract. Branson will host a fan event next month to thank his fans.

Elizabeth Rodriguez (Carmen) did not sign a contract, as previously reported on other soap sites (and this one), but is still on recurring status.

Gotta admit. The Dixie promos almost pulled me back in. When her spirit blew Kate a kiss, it was almost…heaven.
