News for the week of 07-Jul-2008

Picture actor Ricky Paull Goldin (ex-Gus, GL; current Jake, AMC) standing amongst the pre-Daytime Emmy glitterati with his SOAPnet affiliations, with former GL executives milling about. Awkward. Goldin admitted to the awkwardness in his own unique, refreshing manner. “There were a lot of my old producers there, so I did have to deal with certain energy fields. It's like when you break up and then you run into your old girlfriend. But it was fine.” Instead of boning up on the who’s who of daytime, like he (as pre-Emmy co-host) and Emmy co-host Sherri Shepherd (The View) should’ve while en route to L.A. from the East Coast, they just chatted and “had fun instead.” –NY Daily News-Entertainment, “Ricky Paull Goldin's moments on the red carpet” by Carolyn Hinsey, June 27, 2008
From time to time, soap actors are known to give a subtle shout-out to fans in certain scenes, to acknowledge and thank them for the support. Alicia Minshew (Kendall) and Rebecca Budig (Greenlee) did this a few years ago, with Terri Ivens (ex-Simone) and Amelia Heinle (ex-Mia), when the quartet would frequently exclaim “Shazam!” in the midst of their scripted dialogue. “Shazam!” referred to a fan base.
Last year, Bobbie Eakes (Krystal) had to share her husband David Steen with stars Rue McClanahan and Caroline Rhea, as well as the rest of the cast and crew of an upcoming Logo cable TV show called Sordid Lives (to premiere July 23rd). He was on location in Shreveport, LA for a month last year to film this series as G.W., husband to Rhea’s character and philanderer with McClanahan’s. G.W. is a former Vietnam vet sporting two fake legs. Besides visiting her husband in Louisiana for a spell and enthusiastically enjoying the love scenes he shared with his leading lady McClanahan, Eakes also manages a cameo as a soap star. The only downside here is Steen refuses to let Eakes preview his character walking with the two wooden replacement legs.
Jill Larson (Opal) can not allow TPTB in the hair department to use hairspray because of allergies. That challenged the hair department quite a bit since Opal is a character quite fond of hairsprays, wigs and hairpieces. Creative solutions included teasing the bejesus out of her naturally curly, thick hair. As Opal, with the outrageous hair, Larson will take pains to go the opposite with her more demure personality off-screen. At soap events, she is fond of the low-key, sophisticated look. With age, comes the inevitability of coloring the grays. Larson proudly admitted to the practice, and claimed any woman who didn’t is messed up. When she was younger, Larson found herself in the midst of 1970s hipster Andy Warhol and his troupe, as they prepared to film a fashionable flick. Larson looked every bit the hippie flower child, as the flick’s professionals worked over her hair—a three/four-hour deal. At an even younger age, a second-/third-grader, Larson suffered a perm mishap with her long, flowing locks. Her mom gave her a Toni home perm, far from the desired effect. “It came out really like an Afro. I couldn’t get it into an elastic band or anything. There was nothing that could be done. I stayed home for a week! I could not be seen in public.” –Soap Opera Digest, July 8, 2008

An AMC favorite may soon find her way back to Pine Valley, according to a June 14th Ravenbeauty update. However, “There have been some breakdowns in negotiations so it could go either way now. You should hear soon.”
