News for the week of 11-Jan-2010

by Carol Banks Weber

Julia Barr (Brooke) will remain to enjoy her own story arc, starting February 23rd.

Debbi Morgan (Angie) and Cornelius Smith Jr. (Frankie) are two AMC actors chosen by the NAACP as this year’s Image Awards nominees in their daytime drama categories. Fox-TV will air the awards ceremony on February 26, 8/7c.

Susan Lucci (Erica), Cameron Mathison (Ryan) and Rebecca Budig (Greenlee) appeared on ABC7.com in California to promote AMC’s move from NYC by focusing on the good this move will do for the fans, the cast and the daytime genre itself.

Susan Lucci (Erica): “It’s a wonderful testament to AMC that it’s a show that continues to entertain, and that our audience is so passionate and loyal and with us and anticipating this move to L.A…”

Cameron Mathison (Ryan): “The way I see it, it’s a great indication from Disney, from ABC, investing in AMC and the longevity of the show. Things are changing, television is changing right now and you gotta adapt, and go with the changes. There’s aspects that [are] fantastic, and there’s aspects that are tricky. In general, you want what’s best for the show.”

Rebecca Budig (Greenlee): “Moving the show to L.A. reinvigorates the show, gives it sort of a fresh start. I think that’s important, especially in this medium… We’re breathing a little bit of new life into it.”

The L.A.-based GH cast offered some handy tips on places to visit to the incoming AMC cast. Maurice Benard (Sonny) recommended the Vanilla Bake Shop (Julie Marie Berman’s/Lulu family runs the place, and she can be seen in the opening page). Lisa LoCicero (Olivia) liked Casa Victoria (is that the furniture store?). Haley Pullos (Molly) goes to Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt a lot. Drew Cheetwood (Milo): Little Toni’s Italian restaurant in Central San Fernando Valley, (818) 763-0131. Drew Garrett (Michael): Farmer’s Market. Bergen Williams (Big Alice): Bulan Café. –ABC Soaps In Depth

One of the daily highlights of Twitter has got to be Chrishell Stause’s (Amanda) – learn from her natural effervescent unfiltered tweets! She may not be grammatically correct all the time, but she’s always interesting, whether she’s packing up for the move from NYC to L.A., driving down South for the holidays, or fretting because she’s now living in a time zone hours behind the East Coast, “I will never get to see the JLo's of the world fall on their asses!” She puts most soap stars to shame.

While unpacking in her new California dressing room, Stause kept hearing sounds of lovemaking next door. Some fans joked that maybe it was a co-star getting frisky. But she soon learned that a Playboy radio station was stationed there, and “part of their feed was being piped into my room-ha! So my castmates are innocent! [January 6]” Love her.

Word of mouth spread a week ago about Stephanie Gatschet’s (Madison) way with video, as she prepared to leave NYC for California by driving across the country. Reviews of her video updates were favorable. She is a lot more interesting and funny than TIIC at AMC would allow her character to be.

Walt Willey (Jackson) films four days worth of scenes this month, to accommodate Greenlee’s dream vision of life in Pine Valley. Naturally, she imagines everybody happily in love, including Erica and her dad Jack. Willey thought Erica and Jack’s wedding on location in Florida was fab; but too bad they weren’t given a fab marriage, too.

Cameron Mathison (Ryan) was once a soap newcomer on AMC (Dec. 15, 1997). It’s a fact he never forgets and never fails to bring up, as a reminder of how far he’s come and how amazed he still is to be let in amongst this legendary group of soap icons.

AMC director Casey Childs was nominated in the 62nd Annual DGA Awards. He’s been nominated four times for AMC. Childs will learn if he won in his daytime category on January 30th, along with the other nominees.

Gossip for the week of 11-Jan-2010

David Canary (Adam) will only do AMC long enough to accommodate a proper exit—with Julia Barr’s Brooke. Hence, Barr’s return story arc. Expect Canary – who’s based on the East Coast – to be done with the show by spring.

Lurved the 40th anniversary shows (Jan. 4-5), dahlink. Except, I kept gawking at stick woman Kelly Ripa (Hayley). She’s much too unhealthy-looking. All of the regular actresses on this show are already too slim for normal; but standing against her, they look overweight, even La Lucci.

Expect to see different, slightly older AMC children, including Emma (still six) and Adam Jr. There’s also a casting call out for a 20-something, handsome, edgy, charming man, i.e., another Ryan Lavery.

AMC is presumably close to selecting its new head writer, to replace long gone Charles Pratt Jr. The Suds Report writer Nelson Branco wrote on January 8th that former controversial Y&R head writer Lynn Marie Latham will not be the one to take over.

Susan Lucci (Erica) may gamely play along with the previous head writer’s madcap idea of pairing her character up with a much-younger Cameron Mathison (Ryan) on-screen. But, her heart’s in a Jackson/Erica reunion.

Walt Willey (Jackson) will make a bit of a stay at AMC, after creator Agnes Nixon raised the point recently. Lucci, Nixon and Willey are Erica/Jackson fans.
