News for the week of 14-Jul-2008

by Carol Banks Weber

The date of Beth Ehlers’ (ex-Harley, GL) debut as Army Lt. Taylor McBride has changed to July 24th (that’s only another week away). She will arrive on Pine Valley soil to award Frankie with a medal of honor and wait for her next overseas assignment in the Iraq war. The hardline conservative Taylor will also clash with Ricky Paull Goldin’s (ex-Gus, GL) relatively new recast character, the decidedly more liberal-minded Jake. New head writer Charles Pratt Jr. (formerly of GH) promised the clash – taking advantage of the actors’ chemistry on their previous show, GL, as an award-winning supercouple – will herald in a romance. While they differ on political ideals, they share post-traumatic stress and their own individual injuries from the Iraqi war. Their upcoming story borrows heavily from the successful Army Wives series. “The goal is to present the kind of debate that’s going on all over the country in a way that’s entertaining and relatable and without taking sides,” Pratt told TV Guide-Soaps columnist Michael Logan.

Everybody who watched Billy Miller’s villainous character Richie target and torment the other characters on AMC wanted his ass to fry. Even a lovely 80-year-old aunt of a friend of the actor’s. His friend asked to have his aunt’s AMC album autographed by some of the cast. Being the nice opposite of Richie, Miller obliged. The aunt loved her autographed album, then inquired as to how Miller’s friend got the cast to sign it. That’s when he mentioned Miller being on the show as Richie. She instantly retorted, “Richie? I hate Richie! I can’t wait until Richie dies!” Actor Miller took the death wish in stride, since it meant he was successful in his job. –Soap Opera Digest, July 15, 2008

They sure know how to recycle and borrow over at AMC. Confessions of a Media Ho/EYE ON SOAPS’ columnist mentioned two such recent instances in her July 10th edition (on a temporary update page via LiveJournal). When I first read that Annie remembers killing Richie with a crowbar, something rang in the back of my cobwebbed mind. It wasn’t until I read Media Ho’slatest, though, when I realized along with her that it was back when Janet Green killed Will Cortlandt with a … crowbar. And kudos to her for tying in Aidan’s romantic wooing of Greenlee with cue cards, with the hit movie Love, Actually. That one I totally forgot about. Check out her mention of a former, brief AMCer, Amanda Seyfried (ex-Joni), now in a major motion picture with Meryl Streep, the adaptation of the Broadway musical hit, Mama Mia!
