Beth Ehlers (Taylor McBride; ex-Harley, GL) thought about leaving the only soap home she ever knew about a year before she did it. She realized that maybe it was time to explore other projects, what with other people putting that seed in her head left and right. And besides, she saw herself getting older (40), having been on GL since age 19, being away from her children during frequent on-location or far-away shoots, and experiencing some dissatisfaction with the way things ended with Ricky Paull Goldin’s Gus. Then, she became extremely ill before her planned July break and close to her contract’s April expiration date. She took her break in May instead, just to recuperate, and had every intention of coming back on the show when the break was over. “And then, they came to me to negotiate and in the course of that, I was approached by other shows,” she explained, “and it all kind of took on a life of its own.”
Y&R seemed tempting, but not tempting enough to uproot her kids yet again to film on the West Coast. Then, ABC Daytime president Brian Frons said all the right things to Ehlers, so the groundwork was laid for her to stay on the East Coast and choose AMC over GL. Plus, she’d be acting with her friend Goldin again. Her departure produced a not-so-pleasant atmosphere for her. She revealed that no producer, just an intern spoke with her once she made her wishes to leave GL known, and that was only to let her know that she had to evacuate the premises. She also revealed that, initially, AMC’s people considered her as the Liza recast before settling on a brand-new character Ehlers could make her own. Gossip for the week of 30-Jun-2008
The recast Petey Cortlandt (actor Daniel Kennedy) was made for recast Colby. Scheduled for a July 11th appearance, Petey will bear a strong personality resemblance to GH’s computer nerd Spinelli.
