News for the week of 04-Mar-2013

by Carol Banks Weber

Here is the official Daytime Emmy pre-nominee list of GH actors in all the major daytime drama performance categories, from NATAS: Outstanding Lead Actress Finola Hughes (Anna), Kelly Monaco (Sam), Laura Wright (Carly), Kelly Sullivan (Kate/Connie), Outstanding Lead Actor Maurice Benard (Sonny), Jason Thompson (Patrick), Roger Howarth (Todd), Outstanding Supporting Actress Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis), Rebecca Herbst (Elizabeth), Lisa LoCicero (Olivia), Robin Mattson (Heather), Julie Marie Berman (Lulu), Outstanding Supporting Actor Bradford Anderson (Spinelli), Outstanding Younger Actress Kristen Alderson (Starr), Lindsey Morgan (Kristina), Haley Pullos (Molly), Outstanding Younger Actor Chad Duell (Michael), Tequan Richmond (T.J.). The blue-ribbon panel will whittle down the final nominees, May 1.

Rick Springfield (Noah) and his son Liam Springthorpe (undercover cop, a new role) will appear soon for the soap’s 50th anniversary, but not in any scenes together. At least, not that they know of. Springthorpe thinks that’s best. He already feels weirded out by appearing on GH with his dad. “I think it makes it much more pleasing and applicable for me because I think at least for me personally, I have always tried to keep a bit of distance from … my father's path, and respectfully so I think this is a really good way to kind of go about getting my foot in the door, meanwhile being comfortable in the process.” Springthorpe is also a musician, in his own band, History Lesson. People, “Rick Springfield Returns to General Hospital with Real-Life Son!” by Raha Lewis and Dahvi Shira, February 26, 2013

Liam Springthorpe (undercover cop) did not consult with his famous soap star dad Rick Springfield (Noah) or even view past GH episodes with the ‘80s rocker in it. Springthorpe wants to be his own person and start fresh, and dad is all for it. Meanwhile, Springfield has no idea what is in store for his GH legacy character when Noah returns.

IMO, there is a lot left unsaid in Michael Fairman’s thorough, February 25th On-Air On-Soaps interview with Steve Burton (ex-Jason; Dylan, Y&R). It is only toward the end that Burton barely hints at what could be construed as discontent with the ways the storyline could’ve turned involving his character, Sam, and new guy in town, John McBain. Aware of the popularity of Kelly Monaco and Michael Easton from the now-defunct GH spinoff, PC, as vampires in love, Livvie and Caleb, Burton didn’t want that alone to be the deciding factor if he was still around.

He claimed there wasn’t any ill will towards incoming OLTL stars, Easton (McBain) and Roger Howarth (Todd) — not now anyway, not when he’s older and wiser — but he had concerns about how the writers treated Jason and Sam with McBain in the picture. “I didn’t mind the whole McBain/Sam/Jason triangle,” Burton explained. “I just thought; just don’t make it about something that didn’t happen on our show. The only thing I ever said was, ‘If you want to break us up, great. Just do it in a way that is justifiable.’ I am all about drama. I am on a soap opera. If you want to break us up, and have us find our way back to each other, awesome. But I wanted it to be a valid, as opposed to the fact that Michael and Kelly worked on another show together.”

Burton also had to go over familiar territory in this interview: leaving GH, did he leave to retire or not, was it always in the plan to join Y&R once his former boss, executive producer Jill Farren Phelps went there? He did admit to talk of a “fly-in deal” during negotiations, where he could still move to Nashville with his family as planned, but come in for shorter periods to film GH and go back home. But nothing came of it, and he was already out the door anyway. It seemed TPTB weren’t given much warning in advance, as negotiations progressed, but executive producer Frank Valentini/head writer Ron Carlivati did the best they could with that time. Burton elaborated: “I do not fault GH at all. I joke about that I was ‘shot and kicked in the water like a dirty dog.’ (Laughs) My last tape day was coming up quick, and they had written so far ahead. Story-wise, I know Frank Valentini and Ron Carlivati did what they were capable of doing at the time, considering that my end date was coming up so fast. I am sure if they knew ahead that I was leaving for sure in two months, I am sure they would have had a great send-off for Jason.”

As sad as it was to leave his soap opera home and all the friends he made there — Maurice Benard (Sonny) couldn’t bear sticking around later that afternoon to say good-bye — Burton said he was excited about starting over as the new kid on Y&R. He got comfortable at GH, not phoning it in by any means, but just comfortable and believed he needed to get revved up again.

Soaps In Depthdropped the bomb that Julie Marie Berman (Lulu) filmed her final GH scenes February 26. She left the show that gave her two Daytime Emmys in order to spread her wings. This is what she told the magazine staff: “I always have a desire to grow and challenge myself in other mediums. And there are enough reasons now that my gut is telling me this is the right time to finally let go of ‘GH.’” Berman actually quit last July, about four months before her contract due date. TPTB talked her into sticking around a few more months. She’ll miss the soap’s 50th anniversary in April, but maybe not her character, as it’s going to be recast.

When Kristina Wagner’s (Felicia) ex-husband Jack Wagner (Frisco) called her to say he’d been asked to return to GH for a brief time, she tried to be supportive and positive. But inside, she had doubts and churning feelings about pulling off a reunion on-screen. She told Jolie Lash of Access Hollywood that she used those feelings to fuel her scenes with him and it worked out fine.

Kristina Wagner (Felicia) has been hard at work in Indiana on a documentary about the German American Children Of Internment, with her brother Joe Crump. While much has been made of the Japanese Americans interned during WWII, the German Americans also suffered the same fate. Those German Americans also want a public apology from the government, which has not yet been granted. Wagner hoped for the documentary to be completed by the summer.

Ingo Rademacher (ex-Jax) joins a hefty list of soap stars who’ve done Dancing With The Stars. He’s one of the stars to start season 16, with professional dancing partner Kym Johnson. The show recommences with its line-up March 18 on ABC primetime. Reality Steve has also promised that The Bachelor’s Sean Lowe will soon join as a last-minute addition.

*They’re still together? Apparently so. Brian Presley (ex-Jack, PC) and wife Erin Hershey Presley (ex-Alison, PC/GH) will welcome their third child into the world in June. Hershey Presley is pregnant with a baby girl. They already named her Ruby Rose.
