News for the week of 06-Oct-2014

by Carol Banks Weber

Believe it or not, Billy Miller (NuJason; ex-Billy, Y&R) only knew for certain he would join GH “a short time” before he did. It’s not like the rumor mill said, of his leaving Y&R straight for GH all along. Miller also told Soap Opera Digest recently that he didn’t really even pay attention to who he might play on GH, but suspects executive producer Frank Valentini might’ve had him in mind for the Jason recast from the beginning. The actor and the EP work out at the same gym. They chit-chat on occasion, about the industry, since Miller is “an ex-film school brat with a moderate photography hobby, so we have a lot in common.” Joining GH appealed to the actor — who fielded other soap offers — because of that connection. “When the idea that I should come to work for him became a real discussion, the fact that we share many of the same views and that I think I can learn from him were certainly great selling points.”

It’s not a talk show, and it’s not another soap opera. It’s kind of an original idea for an online show — and Nancy Lee Grahn’s (Alexis) spearheading the creative endeavor with a few of her soapy friends. What it is seems to be is Saturday Night Live with soap elements, Grahn tweeted recently. Look for the series on ABC.com.

Tyler Christopher’s (Nikolas) wife Brienne Pedigo (ESPN) is pregnant. They’ll have their second child soon.

Remember Hugo Napier (ex-Lawrence Ashton, Ned’s dad, circa 1980s)? He’s back, ready to stir the pot, giving a glimmer of fake-Luke’s real identity.

Sabrina will permanently pair back up with Carlos before leaving town for good.

Did you see my exclusive interview with Herb Alpert on AXS last week? I got him to talk a teeny tiny bit about GH’s use of “Rise” in the infamous Luke and Laura rape scene, and how it helped catapult the 1979 song to the top of the charts. I also spoke with Tom Wopat (OLTL, Dukes Of Hazzard) at length about his upcoming Seattle Jazz Alley show promoting his new jazz album, “I’ve Got Your Number.” Wopat last appeared in Seattle for the pre-Broadway trial run of the musical, Catch Me If You Can, with another OLTL alumna Kerry Butler (ex-Claudia).
