News for the week of 11-Nov-2012
by Carol Banks Weber
SOAPnet presents a special Thanksgiving Day marathon of Quartermaine-heavy episodes, starting 7 p.m. ET/PT. Quartermania features the November 23, 1995 episode (Lucy’s duck Sigmund could be the Qs Thanksgiving meal), November 27, 1997 (Jason thwarts robbers posing as pizza delivery guys to preserve the Qs Thanksgiving Day tradition), November 22, 2001 (Skye v. Rae=food fight), November 25, 2009 (Luke and his clan join the Qs for Thanksgiving), and November 23, 2011 (Jason brings Sam to the Qs for Thanksgiving).
Ian Buchanan (Duke) and Emmy-winning journalist Jennifer Valoppi will host the first-ever December 1st Floridian Awards in Miami, presented by TMG Entertainment and sponsored in part by Ocean Drive Magazine. Proceeds will go to the American Red Cross South Florida region.
Kassie DePaiva (Blair, OLTL) interacts with Carly, Téa, and Skye when she appears on-screen November 29.
Erik Valdez (Trey) did a lot more than act before GH came calling. He raced cars, a lot, crewed with Southwest Airlines, sustained a graphics business, which he still operates, and started off in the acting field by doing a few commercials in Arizona, then guest spots in L.A. Valdez told El Paso Times’ María Cortés González that he’s always dreamed of becoming an actor and a race car driver while living in the quaint Texas town. He was able to live his race-car dream in his 20s, go so far as to have sponsors and over 20 cars at such a young age, and running quite a few decent races in his home state of Texas, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona. But pursuing such a dream proved costly. Once he made it to L.A. in 2004, Valdez pursued his other dream, of acting, with a fierce determination needed in order to more than break even. “There's a number of talented people out here. I think what separates people who succeed from those who don't is your drive, determination and willingness to basically give up almost everything to pursue a dream. If you're willing to do that, your chances get better,” Valdez said. “In my case, I was willing to live in my car or my buddy's couch before moving back to Texas.” Usually, Valdez takes these acting auditions in stride. But when it came time to put up or shut up for GH’s, he found he was very nervous—mostly because it took awhile to make it to the final screen-testing. Now that he’s in, he believes he’s on a better fast track toward other acting opportunities. It’s hard to beat 21 pages of dialogue on the first day; that’s soaps.
Kelly Monaco’s (Sam) Dancing With The Stars professional dance partner Valentin Chmerkovskiy will appear December 10 as a boxer, with Sonny, Shawn, and Alexis. Monaco switches roles by teaching Chmerkovskiy how to act, but alas, she won’t appear with him.
