News for the week of 16-Mar-2015

by Carol Banks Weber

When Kin Shriner (Scotty) read in his script that Luke would chew a part of his ear off, the veteran GH actor was incredulous. (Yeah, you and me both.) But co-star Jackie Zeman (Bobbie) laughed it off. Shriner quickly got into the spirit of the plot twist — even if everyone quickly got over the “cauliflower”-sized bandage over the bitten ear. “But I love it. I'm a good sport. Whatever they cook up, I'll take it. Cut off my ear, shave my head, poke my eye out like the Three Stooges. I don't care,” Shriner told Michael Logan in a March 9th-posted TV Insider. Ah, but there’s more… Maybe with the famous spiked hair. “There’s some other business coming my way on the show having to do with that—you'll see it down the road. They like to take full advantage of me!”

In January 2011, Maurice Benard (Sonny) tried to board a plane to Disney World with his family for a vacation, which included scheduled fan appearances. But his claustrophobia took over and he had to disembark just as quickly without having made the trip. Not this time. On March 12th, he successfully boarded a plane and flew to New York, according to a March 13th ABC Soaps In Depth report. The report is based on Benard’s recent tweet, where he felt good about the progress, 10 years in the making.

The actress tapped to play Luke and Bobbie’s older sister Patricia is ET’s Dee Wallace. She told Soap Opera Digest online that she couldn’t wait to tackle this role, it’s her first for a soap. Her late husband Christopher Stone, however, appeared on DOOL as Bill Horton. It wasn’t an easy role to tackle for him at first — soaps are notoriously faster-paced — but rewarding in the long run. The chance to work opposite Tony Geary (Luke) also proved to be a huge draw for Wallace. But once she started work on GH, she experienced what her husband had. “Seriously, when I got the first script, I thought, ‘Oh, my gosh, maybe it’s not too late for me to get out!’ I was scared! It was daunting and I thought, ‘My God, surely they are not going to do this in one day.’ But we did — and we did it well. I have to tell you, I would never have gotten through it without those wonderful people in that company. They just took me under their wing and showed me the ropes. From Tony to [Executive Producer] Frank Valentini to the casting director, Mark Teschner, everyone was absolutely lovely. I felt like part of the family within half an hour. It's just a beautiful company and it was a wonderful experience for me.”

Several prominent actresses known for their primetime and daytime soap opera roles will turn up in a new reality show called, appropriately enough, Queens Of Drama, for Pop TV (formerly TV Guide Network), starting with a Sunday night debut, April 26, 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT. Queens Of Drama features special guest stars, Knots Landing’s Donna Mills (Madeleine) and Dynasty’s Joan Collins, with the regulars from daytime soaps — Vanessa Marcil (ex-Brenda), Lindsay Hartley (ex-Cara, AMC; ex-Theresa, PSNS), Crystal Hunt (ex-Stacy, OLTL; ex-Lizzie, GL), Hunter Tylo (Taylor, B&B), and Chrystee Pharris (ex-Simone, PSNS; Scrubs). The cast is filmed trying to put together a new soap opera of their own. The one-hour April 26th debut airs right after the Daytime Emmys, then the new, half-hour reality series will continue starting on April 29th, every Wednesday night, 8 p.m. ET, for 10 episodes. Watch the fur fly in the video teaser up at Michael Fairman’s website.

How is anyone supposed to root for Sonny or Michael in this custody mess when both characters aren’t above manipulating the law and minions to possess a baby as if she’s an Emmy award and not a real human being? And how are any of us in the audience supposed to pay attention to a word of dialogue when that cute little baby’s in the scene?
