News for the week of 20-Jan-2014

by Carol Banks Weber

HLN has effectively backed out of continuing to broadcast the Daytime Emmys. The cable outlet has done so the past two years, but can’t anymore. According to HLN vice president/general manager Albie Hecht, “I just want to put a pause on everything and figure out what we're doing before we make any commitments. Shows like [the Daytime Emmys] need commitments in advance to plan and I don't think we can make that commitment.” The Daytime Emmys’ senior executive director David Michaels said he and his team are pursuing other options. Here’s your chance to see Tyler Christopher (Nikolas) and Laura Wright (Carly) in action, as they co-host the April 5th GH Fantasy Weekend in Montclair, N.J. They’ll bring on Chad Duell (Michael), Kristen Alderson (Starr Kiki), Lisa LoCicero (Olivia), Michael Easton (Silas), Maura West (Ava), Bryan Craig (Morgan), Kelly Thiebaud (Britt), and Dominic Zamprogna (Dante). For only $310 (platinum ticket), $183 (VIP), or $107, fans can enjoy the pleasure of their company. Platinum ticket holders get a 90-minute meet and greet 3:30 p.m.-5 p.m. with the stars before the two-hour show (limit 75 tickets). VIP ticket holders get a photo op (one photo per fan) with the stars together after the 6 p.m.-8 p.m. show (limit 200 fans), 8 p.m.-10 p.m. The fan event will be held at the Montclair State University Conference Center, 1 Normal Avenue, 7th floor.

So far, these GH stars are confirmed with their own events at the annual summer GH Fan Club Weekend in July: Rebecca Herbst (Elizabeth), Lisa LoCicero (Olivia), Tyler Christopher (Nikolas), Kelly Thiebaud (Britt) and Bryan Craig (Morgan), Teresa Castillo (Sabrina) and Emme Rylan (Lulu), Laura Wright (Carly), Kelly Monaco (Sam), Michael Easton (Silas), Jason Thompson (Patrick) and Dominic Zamprogna (Dante), Ryan Paevey (Nathan), Kathleen Gati (Dr. Liesl Obrecht), Chad Duell (Michael) and Kristen Alderson (Kiki), Kin Shriner (Scotty) and Robin Mattson (Heather), Kirsten Storms (Maxie), Bradford Anderson (ex-Spinelli), and Brandon Barash (ex-Johnny), Sean Blakemore (Shawn), Marc Samuels (Felix), and Parry Shen (Brad) hosting Music of the Night karaoke, Haley Pullos (Molly) and Rick Hearst (ex-Ric, Molly’s father), and Carolyn Hennesy (Diane). Remember, the GHFCW happens July 31-August 4 at the Studio City Sportsmen’s Lodge. If you haven’t made reservations at the Sportsmen’s Lodge yet, you’re too late there.

Kelly Thiebaud (Britt) broke another part of her anatomy, her wrist, in a skateboarding accident. It’s not known yet how the show will deal with her injured wrist. Thiebaud was a good sport about her second major injury, joking about January not being a good time for her and maybe she should be handcuffed in one place. “When something like this happens, you freak out worrying that they're going to just stop writing for your character. But they were awesome and said they'd work around it.” ABC Soaps in Depth, January 16, 2014

On the Tuesday, January 8th show, GH garnered the biggest number of overall viewers (3.55 million) in six years.

Donna Mills (Knot’s Landing) was hired recently to take on a major character. A darling of the GH writing staff, Mills will show up later next month.

Nathan Parsons (ex-Ethan) scored a True Blood casting coup. He’ll take over for Luke Grimes as James for the seventh and final summer season.

If Nathan Parsons ever returns as Ethan, I suggest he pair up with Britt — a much better fit than Prince Nikolas, who clearly belongs with Elizabeth, the perennial back-seater.

Roger Howarth (Franco) may take a leave of absence as allowed on his contract, according to Daytime Dish insider HNY. Howarth supposedly asked for the out, coming up. Executive producer Frank Valentini “is not treating RH like crap or blind-siding him… My source only heard FV/RH been in negotiations. He has out coming up and they have been in talks over him taking some time off and story direction as well. The latter is the only reason I heard about this and why I stopped answering Franco questions some time ago.” –posted January 12-13, 2014

Silas’ comatose wife Nina, the one who died last week, could be the daughter of Victor Cassadine and the character Shirley Jones plays. And, Nina may not have died after all. Jones’ character will try to bring Silas and Ava down. Jones will have a field day with this villainous role — think, the next Helena — as she has been working with many former baddies, including Dr. O. As I suspected, Kassie DePaiva (ex-Blair, OLTL) could play the part of Nina. GHH
