News for the week of 20-Jul-2015

by Carol Banks Weber

In further details provided by Soap Opera Digest, head writer Ron Carlivati admitted that bringing little Jake back was for a dual purpose: to give Tony Geary (Luke) a fitting exit worthy of the legacy character and to give the characters who remained something to chew on. If Geary chose to stay, none of this would’ve happened. "When I started on the show, I was bombarded by a certain faction of people who were begging for me to undo Jake's death. While I certainly am somebody who will undo a death at the drop of a hat, this one, at first, I was reluctant to do, because it was such a powerful story. As sad and as heartbreaking as it was, I didn't feel the want or need to undo it,” Carlivati explained. Once he warmed to the idea, he really liked bringing hope and joy to the audience, especially since soaps tend to focus on the negative a lot.

GH ratings appear to be down in the prized, women 18-49, demo for quite a few weeks, while Y&R remains on top in viewership overall. All soaps though have gone down in this demo for the week of June 29-July 3. GH’s numbers in this demo dropped to a new low, for three weeks in a row. Zap2it, Sara Bibel, July 14, 2015

Gossip for the week of 20-Jul-2015

GH head writer Ron Carlivati might think that Luke’s exit story’s worthy of such a legacy character, but the beats so far still feel ill-conceived and at times, laughable. The only bright spot last week was seeing Elizabeth’s reaction to her son Jake, back from the dead after five years. That should’ve reverberated throughout the town for weeks and weeks on end as a major umbrella story. Instead, it became a minor hiccup in a continuing series of pointless vignettes about other side characters who don’t really count (i.e. Madeline, Nina, Kiki, Morgan, Ava screwing Morgan, Ava getting other people to do her dirty work, Franco doing her dirty work). Otherwise, read my latest SoapHub commentary, “Let There Be Demons: Luke Spencer Turns Into Yoda For His Exit.”

A lot of Twittering fans seem to point to Liason as the reason for GH’s ratings crash. Some JaSam fans are even tweeting accusations that head writer Ron Carlivati is catering to Liasons. But doesn’t it take two to tango, or in GH’s case, an excess of deadweight in the cast? What about all these annoying extras in vignettes that go nowhere? Get rid of Franco, Nina, Madeline, Maxie, Dante, Lulu, Nathan, and put Morgan, Michael, Sabrina, and Ava in real stories with core characters that matter. Then, let’s see how the ratings do.
