News for the week of 21-Jun-2015

by Carol Banks Weber

Genie Francis (Laura) said something intriguing about Tony Geary (Luke) in the June 18th TV Line interview with Kimberly Roots. When producers asked Francis to come back to help Geary leave the show, she responded: “I was like, ‘Really?; [Laughs] ‘Really really?’ And they said yes. The next question I had to ask was, ‘Are you sure he wants me to be there?’ Because he’s been very vocal about not wanting it to be Luke and Laura reuniting. My next question was, ‘Is this what Tony wants?’ And they said, ‘Absolutely.’”

While praising GH co-stars, Francis revealed another surprise: sometimes actresses just aren’t generous with their shared scenes, leading some to wonder who she may have been talking about in her past. Shocker! She heaped praise on fellow actress Emma Samms (Holly), who is also back for the Luke exit: “And I have to say: I adored working with Emma. She’s just great. As leading ladies go, she’s not competitive. She just sticks true to her character, and she’s very gracious and sharing. She doesn’t try to undermine the other leading lady. And that’s so hard to find. So many times, that kind of a scene can feel like a battle more than a scene, you know what I mean? And this is just so lovely. I adored her and I would work with her again in a heartbeat.”

In Tim Kenneally’s June 16th The Wrap interview, Genie Francis (Laura) revealed that while Jonathan Jackson (Lucky) also came back briefly to finish up Luke’s story, she didn’t really enjoy scenes just with her on-screen son, “which was very disappointing. But Tony [Geary/Luke] had some scenes with Jonathan that are jaw-dropping, not-to-be-missed, like motion picture-level work. They’re definitely scenes that nobody should miss. I sat at the monitor with my jaw dropped and couldn’t leave, getting chills. So I think it’s something you don’t want to miss.”

This was also when Francis answered — quite diplomatically — a query about her and Geary’s real-life relationship, and whether it was ever rocky as rumored. “I would say that we’re getting along beautifully and that we’re both enjoying this time very, very much. We have — I don’t know, what is it? — 38 years together. Don’t tell me anybody who’s had 38 years together [hasn’t had] a couple of run-ins with each other — if they’re saying they didn’t, they’re full of shit. So yeah — we’re doing very well with each other now, and there’s a lot of love and a lot of good feelings about this ending.”

While actors on GH often don’t know what happens next in their characters’ stories, the press nevertheless continues asking them for spoilers. Genie Francis (Laura) couldn’t meet the full-court spoiler press, but she could imagine stories she’d like for her character. In a June 17th interview with Kambra Clifford on Soap Central, Francis imagined herself running Kelly’s Diner, and falling in love again. For certain, Francis imagined Laura would not stay away from her family, the bulk of whom live in Port Charles. Laura might very well fall in love again, according to spumors out there, confirmed sort of by Francis in this interview. “I think they do have something up their sleeve in that area, so I'm going to let it be. I don't know who or what, but I think they do have some ideas in mind.” Whatever Laura’s story, Francis seemed eager to carry it for once, out from Luke’s shadow.

Gossip for the week of 21-Jun-2015

Based on Trixie’s June 19th DD drop, summer’s going to see one boring story after another: Laura joins Nikolas in his successful ELQ takeover, without Jake — who bails in protest, despite receiving a job offer to stick around, and may romance a returning Paul Hornsby. Also, a lot of cast members won’t air during this time. –via RehvengeIsSweet on SoapZone GH Message Board, June 20, 2015

The return of Genie Francis (Laura) seems very promising, considering she’s finally getting a love interest who isn’t Luke Spencer. But the rest of this summer’s been Yawnsville lately what with TPTB’s endless fixation on Nina and Franco, Dante/Valerie v. Lulu/Dillon, Morgan and Denise… This Denise/Ava charade needs to go. Who thought up this disastrous plot-driven insult to Maura West? The Emmy-winning actress can deliver the dramatic and humorous goods, given the right, substantive storyline. But playing a very bad cover only to get stuck back with that horny little jobless loser Morgan behind her daughter’s back isn’t that story. The cancer survivor’s recent self-entitled claim to Avery in revolting scenes with Michael have me questioning whether the actress even belongs back on GH, only to see her character gutted of any redeeming shades of gray left.
