News for the week of 22-Oct-2012

by Carol Banks Weber

Dancing With The Stars All Star Kelly Monaco (Sam) is the first person to tell you that winners win quite often due to fan votes, not necessarily because they’re the best dancers. She used herself as an example. But the difference in dancing ability and understanding now and back when she first started on the show in season one is like night and day. “The first time, I was taught choreography; I didn’t really learn the dance. So if someone said, ‘Do the cha cha,’ I would do that specific dance routine,” Monaco told Chicago Sun-Times’ Miriam Di Nunzio (October 14, 2012). “Now, I’ve learned the actual dances, so I’m learning the depth and breadth of the movements and the footwork, the fundamentals of dancing, rather than one specific routine.”

Val Chmerkovskiy and Kelly Monaco’s contemporary dance from last week had the public buzzing about a possible real-life romance. This happens in every season of Dancing With The Stars, and nine times out of 10, romance rumors are false. It is in Monaco’s case, insiders insist. She and her professional dance partner are just friends, despite her personally effusive words hinting to the contrary and his obvious smitten, obviously public responses. “Obviously with every week, it gets more and more personal," Chmerkovskiy said. "I was raised with loyalty, honesty, camaraderie. Those are the things that I value the most. She's the person I care about most right now." And she said, "I was raised the same exact way … I've been down a really rough road in my life … I've put up a lot of walls and I don't let many people in. He's slowly allowing me to believe in friendships and relationships and trust and all of that, you know?" When Monaco told People [Dahvi Shira and Michele Stueven interview, October 17, 2012] “I wish [the dance] had gone on forever,” she didn’t lessen the romance rumors one bit, though. Nevertheless Monaco’s real-life boyfriend, Heath Freeman, apparently is taking the whole thing in stride, according to someone who knows Monaco.

Both James Franco (ex-Franco) and Steve Burton (Jason) attended the Austin Film Festival October 19, 7 p.m., at the Paramount Theatre, for the screening of Francophrenia. Francophrenia is Franco’s documentary about the filming of his appearance and story in the soap opera, General Hospital. It’s kind of a film within a film, where viewers glimpse Franco, the actor, joining the soap in a villainous role and Franco, the character, in the soap. Over 180 films are featured at the Austin Film Festival, which runs October 18-25.

Richard Steinmetz (Joe Jr.) wasn’t supposed to end this way. But because of Steve Burton (Jason) leaving the show, TPTB had to revise the story to accommodate his exit, which impacted Steinmetz’s story, unfortunately. The actor would’ve loved to have stayed and explored his character’s relationships, especially with Connie (they never really got into it). His immediate co-stars regretted his early departure as well. “A lot of people told me they were unhappy I was leaving, like Erik Valdez (Trey), my on-screen son, and Kelly Sullivan (Kate/Connie). It doesn’t change anything, but it makes me feel good.” –Soap Opera Digest

Maurice Benard (Sonny) may have been overheard telling a fan recently that he’s not sure he’s going to stay on with the soap. This lends more credence to the rumor that TPTB are planning to rebuild OLTL on the bones of GH.

Not to fret. John Ingle’s (Edward) memoriam will play out in story next month.

What if that’s not the real Todd after all but a plant? Just like that’s not the real Duke? But GH Critical List claims that this Duke is “really Duke, and he is evil.” (Since when?!)
