News for the week of 25-May-2015

by Carol Banks Weber

Rebecca Budig (Hayden; ex-Greenlee, AMC) redeemed herself as an actress to a lot of naysayers in her recent daytime return. She played Hayden, a despicable character hired by Ric to dupe a nice guy, and in the end tried to literally redeem herself with the truth about Jake’s real identity. Budig played the new role with equal parts tough Greenlee snark and an earthy integrity many never before saw at AMC. The actress wasn’t sure she wanted to go back to work at daytime, but her positive experience at GH has convinced her otherwise. “I really enjoyed being a part of the cast. It was supposed to only be two weeks and it turned out to be a little bit more, which I was very happy about,” she told Soap Opera Digest (online). “When I had the baby [daughter Charlotte, born September 8, 2014], I really wasn’t sure if I wanted to work. But now I feel like, ‘Wow, I loved being on GENERAL HOSPITAL and I really do want to work.’ I would absolutely do another soap. I loved being back in front of the daytime audience again.” SOD features more of the interview on newsstands now.

Michael Caruso’s new web series Winterthorne filmed enough to showcase a dramatic trailer last week. Featuring several daytime powerhouses, including Kirsten Storms Barash (Maxie) and Kathleen Gati (Dr. Liesl Obrecht), the DeVanity creator will unveil the actual series August 27. On Friday, Caruso admitted to Daytime Confidential’s Jillian Bowe that he went to CBS to see if he could include some of its daytime lineup in the new series, but was turned down due to conflict of interest. More in the Y&R Gossip section.

Dominic Zamprogna (Dante) and wife Linda have a newborn, as of May 17. Abilene/Adilene Pauline joins sister Anbilliene, 4, and Eliana, 2.

Tyler Christopher (Nikolas) and his wife Brienne earlier in the month had their baby girl (seven lbs., 11 oz.) on May 3 — their second child, joining big brother Greysun, 5.

On May 22nd, head writer Ron Carlivati chose to use an innocuous Soap Opera Digest tweet about its “Performer of the Week” (Y&R’s Melissa Claire Egan) and “Editors’ Choice” (GH) to passive-aggressively call out TV Insider’s Michael Logan for blowing the Duke murder spoiler beforehand: “@SoapDigest Thanks! Although Duke's death was the ‘worst-kept secret in soaps’ only because @TVGMLogan decided it was okay to spoil it. #GH.” Logan responded in an equally snide tone some fans found disrespectful and unproductive: “Sorry @carlivatiron the dismissal of a top actor from #GH is fair game for reporters. If you have a problem with me, you have my number.” Carlivati and Logan’s one-time exchange prompted fans to pop some popcorn, take sides, and speak their minds right back.

It’s been a long time coming, but finally here. Well, there, over at SoapHub, where I’ve started writing weekly commentary since March. After watching countless characters more compelling and important go by the wayside, inexplicably Lisa LoCicero’s Olivia Falconeri continues to stink up the TV with her time-wasting, endlessly distractive plot points, the latest being this insipid baby mess. The actress is adorable. It’s too bad her soap character, the second in a line of clunkers, is like doing laundry that’s never done. “‘We Don’t Need Olivia!’: From Heather’s Lips…” is up for your approval!
