News for the week of 30-Jun-2008

by Carol Banks Weber

In the midst of daytime’s young supercouples in love, veteran actresses Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis) and Carolyn Hennesy (Diane) found themselves standing out in one of the few daytime friendships of our modern-day period. Hennesy likened Alexis and Diane’s friendship to the comedic pairing of Lucy and Ethel (of TV’s The Lucy Show) and the dramatic pairing of feminist film icons Thelma and Louise (from the similarly named hit movie). Grahn heralded the two lawyers as independent, free-thinking feminists who aren’t ashamed of their intelligence and who stick up for one another. “What I like about them and us, in character and in real life,” Grahn said, “we’re women who advocate for other women. We’ve had nothing handed to us on a silver platter. We’ve had to work for it.” Naturally, the sisterly bond they’ve created for the show translated quickly away from the show too. –Soap Opera Digest, “Broad Comedy” interviewed by Tom Stacy, July 1, 2008

In GH: NS casting news, Billy Dee Williams reprises his memorable role as musician-turned-janitor Toussaint.

Gossip for the week of 30-Jun-2008

Some soap operas can’t afford the sneak previews for the following day, so they’re eliminating them.

GH casting director Mark Teschner said they were considering PSNS Galen Gerig for something, but could not find a role suitable for him. He also has no idea about Vanessa Marcil’s return—or not—as Brenda. As far as he knows, Marcil’s doing an indie and won’t be doing GH any time soon.

That’s weird. I was so certain Ingo Rademacher’s Jax would dump Carly the second Sonny mentioned paternity test last week. (Thus, allowing Rademacher to dump GH, as has been rumored lately.) But sources insist the actor re-signed his contract with plenty of breaks so he can be a father to his soon-to-be-born son/daughter in Hawaii. And now, it looks as if Jax isn’t going anywhere, since Carly isn’t pregnant with his or Sonny’s kid.

Every time Megan Ward (Kate) speaks on the show, I can’t help hearing her mouth make these loud, disconcerting sounds. It’s like the sound dentures make with too much spit. What’s up with that?

Ian Buchanan returns to GH as Duke Lavery and romances Anna. Who cares if he’s a corpse?!

Josh Duhon may have lost his GH role as Logan, but he may then cross over to NBC’s DOOL as the sibling of Morgan.

The latest whodunit scenario places Lulu at the scene of the crime. She is convinced that not only did she spurn Logan’s advances, but wiped him off the planet as well. She might’ve done this to defend Maxie who pissed Logan off too much and landed herself in a violent altercation at his hands and with Lulu as a witness. Why doesn’t she remember? Because Logan might’ve had her (and Maxie?) medicated with goofballs. Johnny, Claudia, Maxie, Spinelli, Jason and Nikolas will all try their damnedest to protect Lulu from the detection of a heart-broken Scott and the cops. Logan’s checkered past will come out posthumously, including his drug-dealing side job. At the time of Logan’s end, Jason was nowhere near the premises, but with Elizabeth at their safehouse. When the cops begin sniffing around Jason, she comes through with his alibi. While Jason and Elizabeth enjoy their time together at the safehouse, Claudia’s lurking in the bushes watching it all play out and overhearing all about their secret love child Jake. In the end, it may turn out that Anthony Zacchara called a hit on Logan.

Maybe Claudia and Ric don’t have to marry after all. But Claudia and Nikolas do seem destined to hit the hay, and I don’t mean sleeping.

Jason prevents a thug from robbing Nadine. Johnny joins Jason’s mob as his righthand man.

Not Steve Burton (Jason) and not Ingo Rademacher (Jax), but Jason Thompson (Patrick)…to be the actor hitting the primetime jackpot?

Head writer Bob Guza Jr. revolted me further in his description of Carly with her latest plan—to deceive Sonny and Jax on the paternity of her suspected embryo (SOD, July 1, 2008). He’s all like, we wanted to have Carly turn to Jason yet again as the false father, even though we believe Carly has evolved… but hey, not enough to turn over a new leaf, right? It’s the same ole same ole but instead of A.J. she’s trying to fool, it’s Jax and Sonny.
