News for the week of 04-Aug-2008

by Carol Banks Weber

Phil Carey (Asa) got ornery with Soap Opera Weekly’s Carolyn Hinsey in a recent quickie-interview about his latest scenes with Robert S. Woods (Bo) and Erika Slezak (Viki) – done for OLTL’s 40th anniversary. But through the ornery – “What do you want?” “I don’t have to talk to you. I’m retired.” – Hinsey managed to find out how he felt about coming back for the 40th special after all these months and the two years of chemo. Even as a respected soap vet, Carey admitted he used a prompter and still felt “nervous like everybody else. … You lose a lot of marbles when you have chemo. Your brain doesn't kick in. I can say your name and walk over there and come back and not remember it.” But despite losing some marbles and going through chemo, Carey’s still hanging tough. “I am tired, I'll tell you that. I've got a bad knee, and I don't know what else. It's a tough go. Two years of this [chemo to fight cancer]. But I'm above the grass, not under it.” He enjoyed working with his pal Woods and Slezak.

Robert S. Woods (Bo) would just as soon stay at home when he’s not working on OLTL. Not so his wife, sometime-actress Loyita Chapel (Renee, 1968; ex-Blaize/Dallas). She’s the one, Woods described, who’s the outgoing, life of the party type. But even when he’s beat and ready for bed, she can get him excited about an outing, like having dinner with pals. While watching Dancing With The Stars on TV is more his style, “going over to Lincoln Center to see the big bands and do some ballroom dancing” is more hers. –Soap Opera Digest, August 5, 2008

John-Paul Lavoisier (Rex) and girlfriend Farah Fath (Gigi/Emma, 1968) are worlds apart when it comes to their fashion sensibility. Lavoisier doesn’t have any, Fath is loaded with it. Fath is always on him to clean up his act—he can be found going to and from his OLTL gig in pajama pants and a t-shirt. One thing she managed to sway him on is improving his dry skin without breaking out. She turned him onto oil-free moisturizer and he picked up Neutrogena’s.

Bree Williamson’s (Jessica/Tess) boyfriend Michael doesn’t so much mind viewing his main squeeze in scripted love scenes as he does the tearful ones. Seeing Williamson sob her eyes out, even in a performance, is too hard on him. “I have to walk out of the room,” he said. It’s the same for her dad, who found Jessica’s mournful scenes following Nash’s demise very tough to deal with. Williamson found herself shedding real tears because of the outstanding, realistic death scenes performed by Forbes March (ex-Nash). –Soap Opera Digest, August, 5, 2008

BethAnn Bonner (Talia) and Kristen Alderson (Starr) are very familiar with different TV show themes. Bonner can sing along to the themes of Growing Pains and The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air. But as for OLTL’s own theme, uh… “I can hum the sh** out of that, but I do not know the Snoop Dogg version,” she said. Alderson goes to Friends as a favorite TV show, with the theme song that she knows some of the words to. But the obscure Andy Milonakis Show is a no-brainer for her. –Soap Opera Digest, August 5, 2008

OLTL creator Agnes Nixon appeared on a few of the 40th anniversary episodes to much acclaim. It was as it should be, as far as veteran actress Erika Slezak (Viki) – who turned in outstanding work herself – is concerned. But before Slezak carved out her own 38-year niche with the show, the then-ingenue had a case of the frights about her executive producer boss. “I mean, this is the woman who gave me my job. She wasn’t just the executive producer who was there every day. She was the big powers-that-be in the distance and she could have ended my job any time she wanted to,” Slezak said. “I was intimidated by her power, her fame and everything about her.” –Soap Opera Digest, August 5, 2008

Gossip for the week of 04-Aug-2008

This time travel story would’ve been kewler if Bo and Rex were able to change the course of history, resulting in a whole new and renewed present. No more Spencer, thus, no need for Lindsay to spend any time going stir crazy. That’s just one of many scenarios OLTL could’ve found themselves rabbit-holed into, according to SoapTown USA/CRAZE columnist Jeremy in Chicago. In his July 28th, “Say What???,” what-if column, Jeremy figured it’d be too much to sort out logically, given character histories, to successfully pull off changing events. Still, there doesn’t seem to be much of a point to sending Bo and Rex back to 1968, if they aren’t going to change events. Standing alone as it is, Jeremy wrote, doesn’t work, “it feels awkwardly written and badly acted by double-cast actors who almost seem to be mocking the show’s history…. The double-casting makes Bo and Rex’s adventure seem more like a dream than an alternate reality (because it makes absolutely no sense that Spencer’s mother would look identical to Gigi Morasco). I appreciate [head writer] Ron Carlivati taking a risk with this out-there storyline, but until I’m proven wrong I have to say that I’m a bit perplexed as to why he’s chosen to directly copy a previous storyline which frustrated fans in the first place, while at the same time opening the show up to some remarkably gaping plot holes.” As a special note, Jeremy noticed the godawful (and quite possibly racially offensive) Mexican accent on Maria, as played by Melissa Archer. But how about the horrid Southern accent by Emma, as played by Farah Fath?

Longtime OLTL fan Marlena De Lacroix, on the other hand, found much to celebrate on the show’s 40th anniversary. She was much kinder, focusing on the positives of OLTL’s intelligence and classic storytelling.

A Martinez (ex-Roy, GH) may surface as Ray Montez on OLTL soon.

John Brotherton (Jared) popped up at a July, New York City public appearance by GH’s Josh Duhon (Logan)—not to see Duhon but to confer with the event organizer. Fans recognized Brotherton, who was said to be very cordial and obliging with photo opportunities.
