News for the week of 08-Apr-2013

Now that it’s safe to go public with real opinions, some actors are not holding back. Erika Slezak (Viki) disparaged the plethora of cooking programs outside the Food Network in defense of keeping soaps on the air in a March 29th interview with Zap2it’s Jay Bobbin. “I have to say, they replaced them with real rubbish. 'The Chew' is hanging on, but how many cooking shows can you have? You have a channel called the Food Network; you can go there 24 hours a day, so do we need another show where they're all talking over each other? And 'The Revolution' was so bad, they canceled it in five months.” It’s kind of a turn-off. But if bitching about The Chew and The Revolution gets her through the night…
Despite zero acting experience, reality-TV star JWoww (Jersey Shore, Snooki & JWoww) got the acting opportunity of a lifetime when Prospect Park’s people extended her an invitation to play a bartender at Blair’s new nightclub. It won’t just be a cameo either, but a legit character with a back story. Nikki’s a bartender who slept with her boss, Cutter, then has to endure her boss’s brazen womanizing. JWoww can relate. She was a bartender and she used to sleep around (although not with her boss), so she thought it’d be easy to get into this character’s mindset. Her inexperience comes up though when she contemplates the nuts and bolts of soap acting, the memorization of lines. “But the only problem is remembering my lines and knowing where to step and where to stand. So I just keep repeating my lines over and over with the cast, saying it along with them helps a lot. Last night I was going through them with [my fiancÚ] Roger and I completely blanked and today I'm doing better,” she told MTV (April 2, 2013).

JWoww plays herself when she plays a bartender who sleeps with her boss then has to cool her jets when that boss flaunts his latest conquests before her. She said she never slept with her boss but she did sleep around so this isn’t much of an acting stretch for her. Which begs the point: Why hire someone who didn’t earn the role? Gimmicks over substance. Soaps died in the 1990s, people.
