News for the week of 12-Oct-2009
by Carol Banks Weber
Good news, Tea fans (and there are many of you out there!): portrayer Florencia Lozano plans to perform readings of two of her original works in play form, “underneathmybed” and “girl in window.” “underneathmybed” has been a work in progress for several years and will see a public reading October 21, 8 p.m., at the Public (in the Shiva Theatre). Her second play, “girl in window” (a year-plus project) will show on November 1, 9:30 p.m., also at the Public. No reservations are needed. Just arrive about 20 minutes prior to the play’s reading. The Public Theatre is located on 425 Lafayette St., New York City, (212) 539-8500.
Ilene Kristen (Roxy) joins other soap actors in Adam Bouska’s NOH8 campaign against California’s gay marriage ban. Bouska uses his photographs of these soap actors to spread the word. Bringing Kristen in on this campaign is a no-brainer, as she’s very much all about rights for everyone. She told Jamey Giddens of Daytime Confidential October 9th: “I'm a straight, unmarried woman, but I very much believe that if a gay couple really loves each other and want to get married, why shouldn't they have the same rights as straights? It is ridiculous at this point in time that this should even be an issue. Come on America, get hip already! This campaign is great. Get the word out, in a big way!” Kristen also checks back in with DC this week for another gabfest.
Robin Strasser (Dorian) never wants her and Erika Slezak’s (Viki) characters to kiss and make up. It isn’t that she hates Slezak, far from it; they’re each other’s best advocates. It’s more that she realizes it’s best for viewership and storytelling integrity if they maintain their feud. The second Strasser said she reads a line about knowing glances between the two, is the second she panics that that feud will get lost in feel-good sentiment, disastrous to the compelling art she painstakingly creates for her adoring audience. Dorian versus Viki always provides more for Strasser as an actress.
Strasser also talked a little about the controversy over Patricia Mauceri’s (original, ex-Carlotta) firing over disagreement about the way the character favorably reacts to assuming Cristian is gay. But her talk steered clear of the controversy and conveyed a hands-off attitude about Mauceri more than shed any light on opinion. Here’s what Strasser said (judge for yourself): “I don’t know Patricia very well at all. Don’t hang with her or talk to her on the phone. Frankly, when the story was told to me, I did not feel to act any further. I have great respect for our executive producer; Frank Valentini’s judgment calls in these circumstances. In full-disclosure spirit, Carlotta existed because Robin Strasser years and years ago would get frustrated over the whole mansion thing and I had no servants. Dorian had the worst luck for hiring help. So I started experimenting with names. So I experimented with different personalities, and Carlotta stuck. People would ask me to say it at fan club gatherings, ‘Robin, would you please call Car-lo-ta!’ Then one day I looked at the cast list and suddenly there was a real Carlotta, and that is when I met Patricia Mauceri for the first time. In actuality, a lot of us do not know each other beyond the cordial. I do know Saundra Santiago, who took over the part. We don’t go to the mall together, but I knew her years ago. Whatever may have happened with Patricia Mauceri, if I see Saundra Santiago anywhere, my arms are open and I would give her a big hug.” –Advocate.com, interview with Michael Fairman, October 9, 2009
John Brotherton (Jared) may soon be out of a soap job, but that hasn’t stopped him from applying for new acting jobs, like an Ugly Betty audition October 1st, as well as packing up to live back in California.
Dan Gauthier (Kevin) reappears on OLTL for three shows, starting on October 20th when he greets a sullen Matthew and parents Bo and Nora when they visit in London.
Renee Elise Goldsberry (ex-Evangeline) joins Liz Callaway, Jessica Lee Goldyn, Rachelle Rak and Chelsea Morgan Stock in Broadway Leading Ladies, November 6, 8 p.m., where they will perform high points in their careers, as well as dish anecdotally. Combined, these women have hit all the best notes in all of the best Broadway musicals, from A Chorus Line and The Lion King to Cats, Miss Saigon and The Little Mermaid. The performances take place at the John W. Engeman Theater, Northport, Long Island. Musical director and accompanist is Fred Barton. Call (631) 261-2900 for more info or go to the box office on 250 Main Street, Northport, NY.

John Brotherton (Jared) lingers on in spirit, a little while after his character leaves the canvas.
If Jared leaves, Brian Kerwin’s Charlie might too.
TheSoapWhisperer on Twitter thinks it bodes unwell for OLTL fans that TPTB have held off on adding HD to its soap as previously planned.
