News for the week of 14-Jul-2008

by Carol Banks Weber

Bree Williamson (Jessica/Tess) and BethAnn Bonner (Talia) addressed a blind-item rumor insinuating that their friendship hid lesbian undertones—without actually saying this. They were all, like, we’re friends and it’s cool, and to people (not the cast, they’re cool), aka outsiders, who are all, like, reading something else into the friendship, like, well, whatever. Williamson thought maybe seeing two “strong women hanging out is threatening in general. I don’t know,” while Bonner couldn’t figure out what the big deal was. “Every once in a while, people would say offhand comments about our friendship and we were kind of confused that people would be anything other than just like, ‘Yay, you have a friend! I’m so happy for you.’ Having judgment attached to it? I didn’t get it.” Their… attrac--, friendship… began almost immediately, when Williamson asked Bonner out on a date--, to see a flick Pan’s Labyrinth, which Bonner’d already seen before. Williamson arrived at Bonner’s place, and they wound up chatting and having such a good time that they never saw the flick. Instead, Williamson spent a lot of her free time practically living at Bonner’s, doing everything fun and cool together. This was around the time Williamson began legal proceedings to split from her then-husband. But wait a minute, divorcing her husband—the one she met while surfing in Costa Rica—had nothing to do with becoming best pals with Bonner. “We would have been friends regardless, whether I was having the best time of my life or the worst time in my life!” –Soap Opera Digest, “Mirror Image” by Lauren Flynn, July 15, 2008

Thom Christopher (Carlo) is always excited about returning to OLTL. This time around, he’s tickled to introduce the shocker that Talia is Carlo’s daughter, as well as continuing the dance of torture with Cristian and Antonio. Working with the portrayers is a great perk, Christopher said. And he really gets along well with Talia’s BethAnn Bonner. TPTB inquired about the exciting return in a series of e-mails, but Christopher didn’t even bother with any inquiries about storyline, he was on board immediately, he loves this show so much. A major reason why is TPTB know and preserve the layers in Carlo as a fully rounded human being with villainous tendencies. The actor just finished doing the play Another Vermeer as art critic Abraham Bedius in New York.

Erika Slezak (Viki), Robin Strasser (Dorian) and Trevor St. John (Todd) were absent from the Daytime Emmys the other week due to legitimate reasons. There was nothing political involved (OLTL didn’t win best show or any acting awards). Slezak was still on vacation, and she didn’t want to jinx any win by showing up (when she attended her son’s graduation at a previous Emmys, the show won big). Strasser was home nursing her ill pet dog back to health. And St. John still had a movie – 25/8– to complete, with Wes Craven. Still, the Emmys OLTL snub bugged Strasser, who made her opinions known on her hotline (rumored to be shut down due to technical difficulties). “Not that I’m not terribly grateful that ONE LIFE TO LIVE won [best writing, best directing], but how does it happen that it won… and then Best Show goes to GENERAL HOSPITAL? It’s just odd.” –Soap Opera Digest, July 15, 2008

Brandon Buddy (Cole) would pick his co-stars and pals Kristen Alderson (Starr), Brittany Underwood (Langston) and Jason Tam (Markko) to join him in a reality-TV show if there was one—just for the comfort level. And then, he’d pick Trevor St. John (Todd), Farah Fath (Gigi) and John-Paul Lavoisier (Rex), to add spice to the mix.

Farah Fath (Gigi) caught up with her former DOOL cast mates at the Daytime Emmys the other week. She table-hopped a lot, dishing with GH’s Kirsten Storms (Maxie; ex-Belle, DOOL) and Jason Cook (Matt; ex-Shawn, DOOL). She looked like she was still on DOOL, she hung out with them so much.

Losing everything else at the Daytime Emmys may have sucked bigtime for the cast and crew of OLTL, but taking best directing and writing honors made the losses easier to bear. I hear that the directors roared their approval when head writer Ron Carlivati received his trophy. He received much fanfare as someone who knows and values the soap’s history. It was his idea to properly send Asa off with an off-screen death and a touching wake—part of the reels that were submitted for judging.
