News for the week of 24-Jun-2013

by Carol Banks Weber

Prospect Park’s fight with the unions over production cost is over. It was announced last week that the company putting on OLTL/AMC and I.A.T.S.E New York Production Locals 52, 161, 600, 700, 764, 798 and USA829 reached an amicable agreement. Production will start again on August 12 for AMC, with OLTL to follow.

On the heels of this announcement, came another, more dismaying one. Prospect Park’s Online Network will no longer allow cursing on OLTL and AMC, as of June 24. No word yet on blowjobs and eating out a girl’s box.

Robert Gorrie (Matthew) is one of the break-out stars of the online show. It’s more than his acting chops, a natural way with the camera and a mature restraint which grounds whatever storyline turn or character interaction. Gorrie does his homework, works hard, and gives proper respect to the veterans, learning from them as much as he can. He’s humble, appreciative, and so excited about becoming a part of a pioneering experiment. In a June 21st interview with Soap Opera Network Editor-In-Chief Errol Lewis, the actor gamely commented on his current catfish story and juggling three women on the show, getting to share a scene with his icon, Snoop Lion (the smile was unscripted), and going along for the ride. One of the most endearing qualities of Gorrie is his enormous admiration of the soap veterans. “I continue to be impressed beyond measure when I see these guys perform. They make it look so easy and effortless. My experience has just been watching them, picking their brains, asking them questions, ‘How should I do this? Does this look alright when I do this? Why did you just do that?’ I’ve had a number of scenes with Jerry [verDorn/Clint]… he and I bounce back and forth really well with one another, which I think is important because the Matthew/Clint storyline has been one that’s been developed over the years by ABC. I’m glad to see that they’ve continued that and I’m happy because I feel like those scenes [referring to unaired episodes] are going to be really good when they do come out. I’m just blessed to work with such veterans and I want to carry on this knowledge to the future.”

Many in the know believe Prospect Park’s grand soap experiment has tanked, leading to an inevitable conclusion — even a lot of OLTL cast members. Robin Strasser (Dorian) made mention recently on her hotline (212-414-5300) that she’s done with her scenes for the duration. And, Todd’s exit could be permanent. “If you’re wondering why Todd is still around you won’t have to wonder much longer, and you will be surprised and shocked how Mr. Manning leaves Llanview. Will it be of his own accord or in a body bag?” –SoapTown USA, Loose Lips, June 16, 2013

I’m not much of a fan of mean girl, Nelson Branco. But he did tweet June 20 an astute opinion on Prospect Park caving into the pearl clutchers (over profanity): “Prospect Park has bigger problems: getting the pearl clutchers to watch. Now the younger demo won't watch.” True dat.
