News for the week of 26-Oct-2009

by Carol Banks Weber

One concern Tika Sumpter (Layla) had for the gay storyline was that her character not be dumbed down for it. She had to truly fall for Officer Fish as a woman would fall for a handsome, decent man. It had to truly come as a shock to her that he had been denying his gayness for so long. Once that was taken care of, the emotions naturally came to the surface. In a pivotal scene of confrontation, Sumpter earned high marks for standing up for herself while delivering a powerful plea for Layla deserving real love with a man who was really attracted sexually to her. Those tears weren’t hard to summon up, Sumpter told Michael Fairman for an October 19th Advocate article. “All those tears were as real as real could be; listening to the words he was saying. It just touched me because I felt like so many people have probably gone through that. Imagine a parent denying a child? For someone to have to deny who they are for a long time is pretty harsh. So listening to Scott in the scenes was heartbreaking. I was there and it was raw. At the end of the scene, there was dead silence in the studio.”

Sumpter had something to say about Patricia Mauceri (ex-Carlotta) not playing the gay storyline as was scripted for her character. It’s about acting a part, even if the part is nothing like yourself. To prove it, Sumpter exampled the time she portrayed a prostitute. “As an actor you are given roles and you either play them or you don’t get paid. Angelina Jolie played Gia and she was fierce in it, and so I would play a lesbian any day. You know what I mean? It’s exploration through different people and that is what we are paid to do. Look, every one has their own opinion but that is just how I see it. Listen, back in the '50s African-Americans did not have rights. And every person, if you are gay, straight, or transgender, deserves rights. It’s about equality. Who cares who you are kissing at night?”

Florencia Lozano (Tea) stars with Harvey Keitel, Adrian Martinez, Manny Perez and John Leguizamo in the latest R-rated thriller, The Ministers. It’s out as of October 16, in limited release.

Nathan Fillion (ex-Joey) appeared in a rare gem of an indie featuring a female trucker in a decidedly non-stereotypically female role, Trucker. The star of this indie by first-time director James Mottern is as Method an actor as actors get, Michelle Monaghan, who plays the trucker who has to take care of her son when her ex-husband falls ill from cancer. Monaghan, who film historian and TCM.com blogger Susan Doll described as “terrific in a unique role with true depth of character,” took it upon herself to learn how to drive and control a real 18-wheeler, receiving her commercial driver’s license, to lend authenticity to this role. One of her co-stars, Fillion, goes against beefy, wise-cracking heroic type in the ABC primetime hit, Castle, by playing a best friend who is “really good as a soft-hearted, working-class guy who wants little more than the simple things in life,” Doll told me. Read Doll’s October 19th film review of Trucker – made in 2007 and only now seeing a little theater play, since October 9 – at her TCM.com official blog, MovieMorlocks.com.

Several notable soap stars will match their wits against children in the Fox-TV game show hit, “Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?” hosted by comedian Jeff Foxworthy. The syndicated version will feature soap stars such as Tuc Watkins (David) and GH’s Sarah Joy Brown (Claudia) and Tyler Christopher (Nikolas), the week of November 2nd.
