News for the week of 28-Apr-2008

by Carol Banks Weber

Head writer Ron Carlivati had planned to use Miles bigtime during the heart gala, in ties with Allison, but then the writers’ strike happened, and there went that deal. Allison also wasn’t supposed to go away into a coma, but instead have a CD that revealed the secret that would impact eight other characters. Carlivati also found the Nash and Sarah dabbling a little odd, considering he’s supposed to be madly in love with Jessica and their family. The head writer promised the dabbling won’t be a permanent fixture (yeah, not with Nash dying!). Michael and Marcie will stop acting like they’re estranged and celebrate their anniversary with renewed love, Carlivati added. In a special treat, Carlivati also previewed the return of villain Carlo Hesser (Thom Christopher) for the summer.

Both Kathy Brier (Marcie) and Kirsten Alderson (Starr) just kind of unconsciously knew who their next co-stars would wind up being. Brier said she tested with many actors to replace Nathaniel Marston’s Michael, but as it turned out, it was only Chris Stack she informally said hello to. As for Alderson, she felt at ease around Brandon Buddy (Cole) when he tested with other young actors for the role. The other actors didn’t ease Alderson’s shyness, but Buddy did. When he was indeed chosen to play her on-screen boyfriend, she was very happy.

Susan Haskell takes back the role she originated and won an Emmy for. Marty apparently did not perish in the van crash. The casting coup was announced last week.

Kevin Spirtas (ex-Craig, DOOL) was all set to read for a part on OLTL. He had his sides (a general outline of the character) to prepare with, but then when it actually came time to read, TPTB let him off the hook and gave him a role outright. He still doesn’t know what that role entails, but that doesn’t bother him. He’s just glad to try out an soap he said he’s always eyed as an outstanding one. His normal routine has been to live in L.A., and do gigs elsewhere – New York, Las Vegas – but always return to home base. He’s been doing that for 25 years. Spirtas has his own one-man show, Night And Days, and has done Broadway before. Like Kathy Brier (Marcie), he’s even done Hairspray(but I think that was in Las Vegas). Despite being clueless about the who, when, why and how of his new? character, Spirtas does know and look forward to reacquainting himself with some pals, Farah Fath (Gigi; ex-Mimi, DOOL), Catherine Hickland (Lindsay) and Kamar de los Reyes (Antonio), they did Valley of the Dolls together once. Look for Spirtas’ character to surface maybe next month, he was supposed to film his first scene last week.

Alex Cendese (Winter, surfer dude) shows up next month to be nice to Starr and Cole starting out.

Kevin Spirtas (ex-Craig, DOOL) may not know who he’s playing, but rumors have him resurrecting Marco Dane.

Dan Gauthier may return as Kevin, righting a huge wrong under a former regime. Renee Goldsberry may also rightfully come back as Evangeline.

Thom Christopher brings back Carlo Hesser, but does that end talk of Mitch Laurence? Maybe not.
