News for the week of 01-Sep-2014

by Carol Banks Weber

It’s been one year since Katherine and her portrayer Jeanne Cooper passed. But her spirit still lingers in Y&R’s halls and with those who survived her. Three of them hung out with Michael Fairman (August 25, 2014) to talk about the one-year anniversary and what transpired on the show in remembrance. Jess Walton (Jill), Doug Davidson (Paul), and Tricia Cast (Nina) all hold special memories of the late veteran soap actress, which they shared with Fairman. Here’s what they said in the beginning of the interview:

>> JESS: I kind of feel like, “The joke’s over. Where are you?” It’s really dawning on me personally, that it’s becoming more and more real all the time. I so miss her energy in scenes. Whenever you would walk on to the stage with Jeanne everything came alive in a way it doesn’t without her.

TRICIA: I am not there at Y&R all the time, and when I was there filming these episodes it was really apparent that she wasn’t there anymore. I think she is there in spirit. We all laugh about her and talk about her, but you can’t walk into her open door dressing room anymore and get cursed at! (Laughs) It’s kind of empty.

DOUG: I have to remind myself she is in a different form, in a different place, and when that happens I am saddened. I think her spirit must spend a lot of time around Y&R, because I feel her presence, and what she would say if she were here. It’s almost like she is speaking silently inside of my head. There are aspects of it like with Jess, where you feel, “My gosh, I guess she is not coming back.” <<

Did you know Max Ehrich (Fen) is a new addition to Stephen King’s TV series adaption of Under The Dome? He plays computer hacker Hunter, starting August 18. In an August 27th interview with Kambra Clifford of Soap Opera Network, the actor said he’s not done with Y&R, though. His recurring status lets him do other projects, like the Dome. When he’s not checking up on the show, he’s checking in with his soap parents. “They’re always saying stuff like, ‘We miss you! But we understand. Have fun, but get your [butt] back here as soon as possible!’ They’re really close in my life.”

Terrell Tilford (Dr. Barton) became a dad to his and Victoria Platt’s (ex-Vicky, GL) baby daughter, Marley, August 24. He went on Twitter to share his joy. Now if he could only get a real story on Y&R.

When Shemar Moore (Malcolm) reprised his role of Neil’s brother for a little while — he’s on September 10-11 — the Criminal Minds actor slipped right on in as if no time had elapsed. Well, almost. He said he knew he wouldn’t have trouble picking up where he left off with his on-screen clan. But the pace has gotten even faster on the soap. That took some getting used to. He explained: “People at ‘Criminal Minds’ are like, ‘How do you memorize all this material?!’ and I’m like, ‘What do you mean? We’re doing like seven to 10 pages a day. [At] ‘The Young and the Restless,’ you’re doing anywhere from 15 to 45 pages a day.’ But what’s different this time around is they go way faster than when I was here. We used to ask for second or third or fourth tries, and [now], there isn’t. Once you rehearse… it’s move on, move on, move on. That’s a lot of pressure! It’s great training, but it’s spooky. I’m going to love going to [‘Criminal Minds’] tomorrow and doing my set pages and my six lines that I get to do 48 times each!” –Soap Opera Network, August 28 interview by Kambra Clifford

Wouldn’t it be cool if Katherine left a fortune to Jill in the portrait staring at her every day in that formal living room? Then, maybe TPTB can finally give Jill and Colin that love story their portrayers are always clattering about.
