News for the week of 02-Nov-2015

by Carol Banks Weber

Despite rumors, Justin Hartley (Adam) wants to stick around a lot longer than the year he presumably agreed on. The actor signed onto two more years.

Michael E. Knight (Dr. Neville; ex-Tad, AMC) did a lot of comparing between the soap he came from (AMC) and the soap he’s on now (Y&R). What ties these two soaps together is the new head writer, Charles Pratt Jr. Otherwise, the differences are vastly in Y&R’s favor. Knight told Michael Fairman in an October 27, 2015 interview that coming back to soaps has been good for him, give or take a new learning curve.

“The writing is really good. There were times back in the day on All My Children I have to tweak lines and stuff,” Knight elaborated. “Over here at Y&R, it’s a very well-oiled machine. There is not a lot of meandering … and not a lot of fat … so you can fill it up with acting. The scripts are a good 12 pages shorter than on AMC. I might add a word here or there, but they give me a little leeway, but I am not going crazy with it at all.”

Thank god for Y&R’s co-executive producer Jill Farren Phelps, Pratt Jr., and the cast — many whom Knight knows and/or admires greatly. They’ve made the transition back a lot more fun.

Initially, Knight revealed that his new character, the quirky Dr. Neville, was only supposed to come on for about 10 episodes. It’s been 10 now, and TPTB would like him to do more, which he’s glad to do.

Even a soap veteran like Knight was nervous about returning to daytime. As grateful as he felt for the honor of being asked to play an eccentric doctor (not necessarily hilarious like Tad used to be), he admitted to struggling with the fast pace and the fast lines again. “I’ve been out of the game for a while. My last job was playing a dead body on NCIS, so the chance to get to talk again was kind of nifty!” –ABC Soaps In Depth, October 26, 2015

Gossip for the week of 02-Nov-2015

Daytime Confidential’s Jamey Giddens reported on October 30 that Burgess Jenkins (Billy) is out, with another recast on the way… Maybe Jason Thompson (Patrick, GH), who announced his departure moments earlier. “Setside sources reveal former General Hospital star Jason Thompson (ex-Patrick) is the frontrunner to replace Jenkins in the role. However, a deal between Thompson and the CBS soap hasn't been reached yet. ‘They're moving forward with or without Jason,’ says one insider,” Giddens wrote. “Rumblings persistY&R is gearing up to do another plastic surgery arc to explain how Billy Abbott goes from looking like Jenkins, to potentially having the mug of Thompson.” Didn’t this very thing happen to Jake/Jason on GH, with Billy Miller who left Y&R as Billy to…? Oy vey, the recycling of these soaps.

Jamey Giddens also reported on Twitter October 30 that Justin Hartley (Adam) will stay in the role and try to look into pilot season, according to sources.
