News for the week of 06-May-2013

by Carol Banks Weber

Since returning to the hospital last week, Jeanne Cooper’s (Katherine) condition has deteriorated. To what extent nobody but her closest loved ones know. Her son, Corbin Bernsen, has been keeping fans updated on his Facebook. He’s been chronicling his struggles with letting go and letting G-d, especially after his mother’s lived such a spectacular life and is now going through hell (“I asked God many times today, why. Why would you give us this incredible life and end it so miserably?”). He hasn’t given up on her, but he has made his peace.

Y&R is going to be hard to beat in this year’s 40th annual Daytime Emmys. On May 1st, Good Morning America announced the nominees chosen from the pre-nom list. The show, Michelle Stafford (Phyllis), Peter Bergman (Jack), Doug Davidson (Paul), Michael Muhney (Adam), Jessica Collins (Avery), Melissa Claire Egan (Chelsea), Jeff Branson (ex-Ronan), Billy Miller (Billy), Hunter King (Summer), Max Ehrich (Fen), and Bryton James (Devon) are all nominees. Winners will get the glory in a June 16th awards gala at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, to air on HLN.

No Why do you come off as such a douchebag? I’m shocked. In between doing damage control and calling people out for starting trouble over an innocent mustache joke (that Eric Braeden/Victor didn’t take kindly to when it was brought to his attention—the joke wasn’t about him, it was just a joke), Michael Muhney (Adam) took some time out of his oh-so-busy schedule not following his show’s colleagues for an impromptu, April 30th fan Q&A on Twitter. One fan question was something I’d always wondered. Muhney answered!

After Tony Geary (Luke, GH) took home another Emmy last year, Michael Muhney (Adam) pissed off a lot of soap fans by tweeting his strong disagreement, saying that the Emmy voting panel was out of touch. This year, Geary’s nowhere to be found while Muhney’s a leading actor nominee. Surprisingly, Muhney doesn’t even think he’ll win. He’s so amazed by Jason Thompson’s performance on GH as the widower Patrick Drake that he’s gone on record raving about it — even if two of his co-stars are also nominated.

“I’ve had the luxury of seeing the Lead Actress and the Lead Actors’ reels, and if I’m going to be as honest as I’ve purportedly been since I joined the show… then I would have to, from this point forward, shout from the rooftops that Jason Thompson [Patrick Drake, ‘General Hospital’] deserves the award. If you watched his performance, and what he did, and the story, how it was so perfectly teed up for a great, brilliantly layered performance by him, there should be an eight out of a 10 chance that he takes this home… So I don’t think I should win. It wouldn’t be fair to Jason.”

Muhney himself made sure he submitted reels that featured more subtlety, hoping the Emmy panel would see the test in that and not just the usual big bang theory. In the reel, Adam has to end things with Sharon to make Chelsea happy and give her peace. “You just see him kind of subtly being torn apart at the seams. There are a lot of people coming at him throughout the episode needing things, and he’s getting stretched really thin, which I thought was an interesting performance to submit, because [it was] an opportunity to submit a story that’s more nuanced and isn’t over the top and isn’t flashy dramatic. It was a nice test to see if, in fact, the voting panel is finally at that point where they can be nominating something really subtle, and there doesn’t need to be explosions and crying and breakdowns and awful, pivotal moments.”

Erin Chambers (ex-Siobhan, GH) will play paralegal Melanie Daniels starting June 5. It’s a recurring role. She’ll play scenes with the Newmans, helping them out.

Daniel Goddard (Cane) does a spot at the Price Is Right game show June 17.

Beth Maitland (Traci) drops in on Jack in a longer return, kicking off on May 8. Daver Morrison shows up May 7 as an investigator.

Gossip for the week of 06-May-2013

In what universe is Jessica Collins (Avery) worthy of a Daytime Emmy nomination, but Daniel Polo (ex-Jamie) isn’t? If it weren’t for the extraordinary Polo, the teen bullying story would’ve been a colossal joke—just like this Nick/Avery/Dylan fiasco is. Talking a subject to death isn’t a love story, people.

Michael Muhney (Adam) continues to (inadvertently?) seek the bad side of the limelight on Twitter by posting provocative, baiting, annoyingly self-important, faux-humble musings, then crying foul or innocent when taken to task. Whatever the case, on May 3, he got in trouble with The Mustache, aka Eric Braeden (Victor), for tweeting some lame joke about men with mustaches and pedophiles. It went downhill from there. Follow the rabbit hole, kids:

>> Tip of the day: Not all men with mustaches are pedophiles. But all men who are pedophiles have mustaches.

So this unnecessary drama just happened. Thanks so much @daisy099:

Somebody took my innocuous joke & innocently passed it on to my coworker. It then made it seem like I was talking trash about said coworker.

In this case it wasn't a "jerk", it was a very nice fan that simply made a foolish mistake & went to my costar to "stir the pot"...

And now my coworker & I have exchanged several heated texts, he incorrectly assumes & insists my tweet MUST have been about him...

So now I'm going to respond to my costars' condescending tweet, directed at me (because I have ignored several from him in the past year)...

RT @EBraeden: someone is walking on VERY thin ice! Mutterings of an insecure boy!!! <I'M ON VERY SOLID GROUND, NOT ICE...I ASSURE YOU.

RT @EBraeden: on VERY thin ice! Mutterings of an insecure boy!!! <THEN YOUR TWEETS ARE SIMPLY THE MUTTERINGS OF AN INSECURE OLD MAN!

NOW I'm going away to cool off from Twitter, because everything else I have to say right now would be far worse than what I've just said... <<

Michael Muhney, please step away from the social networks, take a good, long look in the mirror — if you are capable — and do whatever you have to do to use your free time more wisely. Perhaps you should take a break then only follow industry colleagues, family, and friends, and comment on industry issues, like the rest of the professionals do. Maybe you’d like to check out young Daniel Polo’s Twitter for how to behave with fans if you insist on consorting with them. Just a thought. It’s almost painful to watch you self-destruct under this foolish, transparent guise of dignified heroism.
