News for the week of 09-Feb-2015

by Carol Banks Weber

Veteran soap actors Eric Braeden (Victor), Peter Bergman (Jack), Doug Davidson (Paul), Christian LeBlanc (Michael), Billy Miller (ex-Billy; Jason/Jake, GH), and Tracey E. Bregman (Lauren) led the pack in the Daytime Emmy pre-noms, announced last week Wednesday. The final nominees come out March 26, with the 42nd annual awards ceremony set for April 26. For the outstanding lead and supporting categories, Y&R dominated in pre-noms with an embarrassment of riches, give or take a few questionable additions (the boring Jessica Collins/Avery, again?, Hunter King/Summer, for what?). But that’s JMHO. View the rest of the popularity contest here at the Daytime Emmy site.

New executive producer/head writer Charles Pratt Jr. set the stage for his return to daytime soaps with this promise: “The key with this show is to listen to the audience and reward them with the quality of storytelling the show has been known for … inject some wild incident, and keep the stories coming from inside the characters.” He spoke to the Hollywood Reporter’s Kimberly Nordyke for a February 5th quickie about what’s to come. Pratt didn’t really say anything new, different, or exciting for a soap opera exec/head writer. Just the usual spiel honoring the Bell regime, kissing the cast/crew’s ass, “inject new life and energy into a classic soap,” “make every day a Friday,” blah blah blah, get people to invest in the characters so they’ll watch and root for them throughout the many cliffhangers.

The most hotly contested categories in the 42nd annual Daytime Emmys has to be outstanding lead actor and actress. Y&R has both stacked with outstanding veteran character actors with enormous appeal.

Billy Miller (ex-Billy) is gonna be hard to beat in his exit story as a father grappling with demons after losing his daughter Delia in a senseless hit ‘n run. If anyone has a fighting chance, it’s probably GH’s Tony Geary (Luke), who is experiencing a renaissance playing the dual roles of questionable good and enthusiastic evil.

Not really sure why Jessica Collins (Avery) ranks up there alongside Katherine Kelly Lang (Brooke, B&B), Alison Sweeney (Sami, DOOL), Heather Tom (Katie, B&B), or Maura West (Ava, GH). Collins’ boring portrayal of the slightly passive-aggressive, mind-numbing talk show Avery doesn’t do much for the show IMHO. But whatever floats your boat, ‘cause how legit is an awards show with Lisa LoCicero (Olivia, GH), Kristen Alderson (Kiki, GH), and Hunter King (Summer) up there? At least we didn’t get Emmy-winning Christel Khalil (Lily), too.
