News for the week of 10-Dec-2012

by Carol Banks Weber

Y&R, DOOL, and OLTL received December 6 Writers Guild of America nominations in the daytime television category. On February 17th, concurrent ceremonies in New York and L.A. will fete the winners.

Carolyn Conwell (ex-Mary Williams, Paul’s mom) passed away recently at age 82. Doug Davidson (Paul), who played her on-screen soap son, attended the December 2nd memorial service and was saddened by the passing. He issued this statement on his Facebook: “She was the finest actor I have ever known and such a giving soul. Her progeny are fabulous people. A credit to a life well lived. I truly can't say enough about her. I love her and miss her presence. God bless her and her family.”

The popular Marcy Rylan (Abby) returns to the set starting January, but in a recurring capacity.

Mark Pinter (ex-Agent Rayner, GH; ex-Brian, ATWT; ex-Grant, AW) will play Congressman Marcus Wheeler starting January 10 in a storyline with Eric Braeden (Victor) and Peter Bergman (Jack).

Gossip for the week of 10-Dec-2012

Michael Muhney (Adam) got introspective for his Twitter public on December 6. Not sure what brought this on, but from his timeline, it seems he’s still defending himself against accusations that he’s a disingenuous showboat. Whatever the prompt, he’s definitely working out some personal issues: “...so let's see if I can keep a promise to myself: I want to be a better human being. #>wishMEluck #>iNEEDit… I figured if I was brave enough to tweet this out to the world, it would challenge me to become a better person. Less of an asshole... there are times in my life that I get reflective and really really wish I were someone else... I get too defensive, I over-compensate, I'm insecure, I feign confidence, I have rejection issues, and at times I'm just not nice... there are a lot of times I am the most abrasive person I know. And I hate that about myself. And others (rightfully) do too... Random: Sometimes I'm convinced I'm the worst person I've ever met...”

For all my criticism of Muhney, his December 7th scenes in the horrifically played out Newman housewarming party were outstanding. The valor expressed in grounding, restrained, but truthful performances by Muhney, Josh Morrow (Nick), and Robert Adamson (Noah) almost restored my faith in this fledgling show, which has yet to find footing. When Muhney is quiet, he does more than 3/4ths of the loudly floundering cast, including many of the vets. His quiet consideration of Jack at work is also something marvelous to behold.

As for that housewarming attack on Sharon… WTF? Is that what passes for daytime entertainment nowadays? If so, count me out. I’ve no desire to see grown-ups eagerly go after a mentally ill woman in front of her son. Victor, Nikki, Victoria, and that dumb bell extra Carmine looked like monsters delighting in Sharon’s downfall. Their rooting value dropped for me significantly. Let’s not mention how the entire debacle made a mockery of mental illness in general. Most fans with half a heart have no stomach for such “bloodsport,” as Nick described it to Avery.
