News for the week of 10-Mar-2014

by Carol Banks Weber

On March 3, the Daytime Emmy pre-noms came out with the usual suspects and one glaring omission. The final nominees come out May 1. For lead actress: Jess Walton (Jill), Sharon Case (Sharon), Jessica Collins (Avery); lead actor—Peter Bergman (Jack), Doug Davidson (Paul), Christian LeBlanc (Michael), Billy Miller (Billy); supporting actress—Tracey E. Bregman (Lauren), Amelia Heinle (Victoria), Elizabeth Hendrickson (Chloe), Melissa Claire Egan (Chelsea), Cynthia Watros (Kelly); supporting actor—Greg Rikaart (Kevin), Robert Adamson (Noah), Steve Burton (Dylan); younger actress—Christel Khalil (Lily), Hunter King (Summer); and younger actor—Max Ehrich (Fen), Daniel Polo (ex-Jamie). Where’s Michael Muhney (ex-Adam)? See Y&R Gossip below.

One of the main reasons Amelia Heinle’s (Victoria) committed to this show is her real-life connection to on-screen parents, Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki) and Eric Braeden (Victor). She said she didn’t know exactly why but when she first started on the show (as the recast daughter), she was nervous as hell. But these two veterans made her feel at ease and soon developed a familial rapport. They’re really like her parents. Thomas Scott even remarked at one point that Heinle reminded her of her real-life daughter Liz, which Heinle could totally see.

Losing her on-screen other half, Billy Miller (ex-Billy), was hard on Heinle. It sounds like Heinle’s still getting used to the change. She went into some detail as to her and Miller’s contract negotiations at the time, not knowing his final outcome until after she’d already re-signed. That’s when she began to really miss him and appreciate all the hard work he put into the role and their pairing, making it all look so easy. “The sad thing for me is I wish I would have known these were the only years I had with Billy, because I wouldn’t have taken them for granted. It was fun what we created,” she said. “Billy worked very hard on the role of Billy Abbott and actually I would say to him, ‘You don’t even care … this all comes to you so easily!’ And he said to me, ‘No. I really do care. I do work hard.’ I meant it in a way like he is one of those guys that just has it and so the performance comes so easily …  but he really put me in my place for a second. I stepped back and thought, ‘He’s right. He does work.’ It took a lot from me to make my half of it work, so I knew how committed he was to the work. I just hope that someone sees that him in.”

While Heinle appreciates the work the recast Billy has put in, it was still hard for her to adjust the day she had to film opening that door to David Tom and not Miller. They had to work on that sequence very hard, with the producers asking her to find something within her to make it translate. “It was a big challenge for me, and it is going to take time. But nobody is ever going to replace Billy Miller in my heart. It’s the most fun I have ever had on a soap in my career.”

Fairman was on hand at the Y&R set the day of Thomas Scott’s 35th anniversary celebration to conduct the interview.

Some soap stars — Eric Braeden (Victor), Colin Egglesfield (ex-Josh, AMC), Corbin Bleu (ex-Jeffrey, AMC; Dancing With The Stars; High School Musical), Vanessa Marcil (ex-Brenda, GH) — will join pro racers and other celebrities in the 38th annual Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach Pro/Celebrity Race April 12.

Eileen Davidson (Ashley) and Beth Maitland (Traci) return to the studio March 20 for another fan fave reappearance, April 18. Davidson appears again on April 21. The occasion? An Abbott shindig. DOOL’s PTB picked Davidson back up to play out a major story arc as Kristen.

Jon Lindstrom (Kevin, GH; ex-Craig, ATWT) made it official with his longtime love, Cady McClain (NuKelly; ex-Rosanna, ATWT; ex-Dixie, AMC). The two got married on Valentine’s Day in a Beverly Hills courthouse, the same one as Bogie & Bacall. Afterwards, they went home and had a party with a burger truck and a bar in the backyard with his parents and her sister, and a couple of friends (GH’s Lynn Herring/Lucy, Kin Shriner/Scotty, John J. York/Mac), McClain handled the details. Their wedding/reception was as low-key and casual as they are. Their honeymoon, a jaunt to Mexico, also fit that bill. Lindstrom described the lead-up to the moment just as casually: “No, it wasn't spontaneous but nor was it always the plan. We've been engaged for quite a while and it just seemed like the natural order of things. We also felt that there would be real protection for one another if we got married. We love each other deeply and get along so well that it was kinda like, why not? I'm not going anywhere. Cady's not going anywhere. So, really, why not?”

Gossip for the week of 10-Mar-2014

Word on the grapevine is that Michael Muhney (ex-Adam) may have taken himself out of the Daytime Emmy running. Hence, he’s not on the pre-noms as he should’ve been.

How the hell did Y&R win so many record viewers for February Sweeps? The best-ever since 2008 for both Y&R (5.2 million viewers) and B&B (3.88 million). For what? Showing up?? Aim higher. Source: Daytime Confidential/Jamey Giddens, March 7, 2014.

Amelia Heinle (Victoria) misses Billy Miller (ex-Billy) so much, she practically threw David Tom (Billy) under the bus in a recent Michael Fairman interview. She said Tom’s doing fine, but… She also seemed to infer that maybe Victoria will spread her wings with Stitch or other guys, and didn’t sound all too bummed about it.
