News for the week of 11-Jun-2012
by Carol Banks Weber
Three-time Emmy winner Jennifer Landon (Heather recast; ex-Gwen Norbeck, ATWT)—receiving mixed reviews so far—seems to have a firm handle on her new character (new to her), despite the role being inhabited by several actresses. Enlightened a bit by TPTB, Landon described Heather this way: “One of the directions that’s new that we’re planning on taking… [is] to give Heather a little bit more of the salt of the earth quality. She comes from a middle-class family. She has some scrappiness to her. We also talked about showing her vulnerability more… I think that the first few episodes it’s going to be kind of a little different as I try to make my way and find her. …Ultimately, there’s a goodness about her. She’s a woman and she’s a professional, who due to her history is always probably going to be with her dad in some way.”
If Maurice Benard (Sonny, GH) had his way, he and Eric Braeden (Victor) would swap soaps (could you imagine the two of them going toe to toe?). Benard’s a huge fan of cross-overs. “This whole thing of bringing actors in to GH, I have been talking about for a long time. I hear people’s comments that, ‘It’s confusing.’ But I don’t care, it works! It brings new energy and blood. Even on different networks, if you work it right, it’s like, ‘Hey, I will let you have Sonny on Y&R, if we can have Victor on GH.’ It’s like a trade, and it would be fantastic and it would bring in the audience.” I agree. –Michael Fairman, May 1, 2012 interview
After starting the soap in September of last year, Peter Porte (Ricky) will soon go, most likely in an explosive exit storyline.
Jeanne Cooper’s (Katherine) memoirs, “Not Young, Still Restless,” comes out on July 31st. Don’t miss a chance at buying this.
Jeff Branson (Ronan), like most viewers, didn’t want to return to the “same cop rigmarole where you’re doing police procedural stuff and interrogation scene after interrogation scene.” He expressed his wish to work more intensively with Tricia Cast (Nina) — “I feel such genuine, searing emotions every time we work together” — and got the go-ahead from EP/Head Writer Maria Arena Bell. But there are some things MAB wants him to play too, in return. When Ronan does return, starting on June 26th, Branson hopes it’ll be with Elizabeth Hendrickson (Chloe) in some capacity — “It’s a chance for him to drop the frosty, crusty exterior he puts on because Chloe really gets under his skin, but in a good way” — and knows for sure he’s got scenes with Jennifer Landon, the new Heather, which he’s done already, “… I’m a big fan of her work. I think this will bring another dimension to her character, which means the whole Ronan and Heather can be revisited again.” –Soap Opera Digest
Max Page (Reed Hellstrom, Victoria’s child), seven, will undergo heart surgery June 14 to help fix a congenital heart defect from birth. He’s had to endure several surgeries. Wish him a speedy recovery by writing to him via the Y&R studio: 7800 Beverly Blvd., Suite 3305, Los Angeles, CA, 90036. Send donations in Page’s name to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
Lindsay Bushman’s (SORAS’d Summer) grandmother and aunt are huge Y&R fans way back from the beginning. They were nonplussed by her other acting gets. But when Y&R came up, they perked up. Her grandmother was able to actually accompany Bushman to her first day on the job at the Y&R set, a thrill for the longtime fan for sure. “My grandmother was in town from Florida. She had this trip planned for a year and it happened to be the one day I was working on The Young and the Restless, so I got to bring her,” Bushman explained. “She had a blast. Daniel [Romalotti] was so sweet and [spoke] to her for a while. She had so much fun, it was great.” Most soap newcomers are scared by the faster pace of soap filming, but Bushman — whose first day of filming just happened to fall on her 18th birthday — loved it, over the slow slug pace of mainstream projects. “It’s fun. You come in prepared and you get it done. I kind of like that. It drives me nuts having to take 10 shots from 90 different angles.”
