News for the week of 13-May-2013

by Carol Banks Weber

After a brief bout of an undisclosed illness, the great veteran actress Jeanne Cooper (Katherine) quietly left this world. She passed away in her sleep, with her daughter beside her at L.A.’s Cedar Sinai Hospital, at the age of 84 on May 8. Her son, actor Corbin Bernsen (Father Todd), had kept fans updated on Cooper’s medical status, while giving them a private glimpse into his pain and hope all rolled up into one on Facebook, too.

“My mother passed away this morning just a short time ago, peaceful with my sister by her side, in her sleep. I was going to visit this afternoon, thought I had time. Reminder to self - time is a precious thing. I too am at peace however. I said my goodbyes several times over during the last few weeks. I'll go one last time now for a gentle kiss a final farewell for this lifetime. She has been a blaze her entire life, that beacon, that boxer I spoke of earlier. She went the full twelve rounds and by unanimous decision... won! And while her light finally gave into the wind that gives flight to all our journeys, there will always be a glimmer left behind by what she stood for. I will speak about that more in coming days, months I suppose. I will certainly dedicate what remains of my life to continue her purpose of honesty, equality, humility, empathy and love. So many of you have said your prayers for her and right now, today, I can say the best way to honor her is to inhabit your lives with those things she stood for. I would ask that closer friends respectfully give us some time to find our family's path in this transition, and please limit calls, emails and the rest for a couple of days. As always, your outpouring of love here on this page, is not only welcomed to continue but truly appreciated and comforting. I asked my sister what time she passed exactly, and she told me (not too important for public record) but I was working out and just happened to pick out a song for my final moments on the treadmill – ‘Everlasting Light’ by the Black Keys. Oh what a wonder it all is... what a magnificence!”

Expect a fitting tribute show May 28 for Jeanne Cooper (Katherine). Cast, crew, family, and friends will film next week. The special episode will feature interviews, clips, and remembrances.

Peter Bergman (Jack; ex-Cliff, AMC) views the glass half-full when it comes to the state of soaps today. In a May 6th interview with Time’s Lily Rothman, Bergman cited successful mainstream soaps like Downton Abbey, the popularity of online television (note: the high ratings for the debut of online, formerly ABC Daytime soaps AMC and OLTL is nothing to sneeze at), and the ratings spike for existing television soaps, including his own, as proof that the daytime genre’s hitting a new, different, but decided high. “The state of the soap opera is actually healthier than it was a year ago. This may be the perfect time for All My Children and One Life to Live to launch online. And I’d love to see it be a giant success and for ABC to be really embarrassed by it all.”

Gossip for the week of 13-May-2013

There are still way too many characters on this show. It’s hard to focus on any of the compelling stories, or to weave other characters into those stories. Imagine how much stronger Lauren’s infidelity would be if Chloe and Kevin were important factors — other than providing Fen occasional shelter. Kevin understands the darkness Fen faces in a more sympathetic way than Michael, because perhaps Kevin is still drawn to that darkness, whereas Michael has completely condemned it as acid. The battle lines over Newman Enterprises is a tired, old story that’s been repeated too many times to be believable or rootable. It doesn’t help that the movers and shakers are complete asshole Narcissists: Victor, Victoria, Adam. Nobody cares; in fact, everybody wishes these three would drop into a manhole. Nick is floating around useless ever since TPTB inexplicably paired him up with the deadweight Avery narrating her entire life’s story instead of living it. And Summer? GMAFB. She hasn’t been substantive since Jamie moved to D.C.
